Well mick on last day of term back in the day we would do all we could to get one over on them .... now the kids parents in my boys school on average are spending £10/20 per kid each on the teachers and TAs their cars loaded with parcels , when did this start ? I ask

Suggestion Let the class decide on a charity and suggest small donations from those who wish to donate

No harm in kids showing them a bit of respect No harm in HMRC seeking PAYE and Class1 NIC as they are legally allowed to. (PAYE from the donor, NIC from the employer)

I had such a crush on my French teacher. I’d have loved to given her something at the end of term.

EDIT, unless there is a specific agreement with HMRC. Many company HR policies specifically prevent employees from receiving gifts for this (and nefarious) reasons. In practice....

In practice.... Thought so. A friend of mine is a self employed hair dresser and has to declare tips to HMRC. Even if they don’t get any it’s assumed they did so they pay a charge….not sure if that’s right, but it’s what they say.

I ask I'd rather the kids club together and allowed me to spend the money on a big present not boxes of chocolates and four packs of Brew Dog. Or teachers could set up a Just Giving page. That might make it easier. But I don't teach in a school so I can only press my nose up against the staff rooms up and down the country in envy.

I ask My kids got their class teacher a box of choccies at the end of the year in infants school but it's never happened since. I remember when a teacher would just be grateful to not be sellotaped to a classroom door on the last day of term. That was the only type of present we bothered with

We have the stay at home parents sending messages to class WhatsApp groups asking all parents to fund towards a gift. I always contribute, but I find it a bit weird buying someone a gift just for doing their job.

That's good to know, I'll set up a Oak Frame Design Architects "just giving" page and send you across the link.

One person usually organised contributions for the whole class , an amount is suggested, its not really voluntary

Its not like the Teachers organised it, is it? This kind of approach happens in a lot of workplaces, and people usually end up resenting it because it's something they feel coerced into rather than giving voluntary. Ive worked in schools for years and not come across anything like this, sometimes cards from appreciative students.

I think if they want to give individual presents etc then fine rather than asking all to contribute . My Dad always gave my headmaster a few bottles of Powers Whiskey at Xmas. Oddly I never got detention.
