As club captain its deserved... Always gives 100% and our most experienced player. Stuck with us when many would have walked. We could only dream he would walk. We’d way better off. Then he’s give the clown the captaincy. Unbelievable.

On the pitch he has obviously shown zero leadership skills over the years, but in fairness by most accounts he is a decent professional off the pitch.
But regardless of where you stand on the Joe Allen debate, it is abundantly clear that building our team around him for the past five years has been an unmitigated disaster, and this announcement merely sets us up for more of the same as it means he’s nailed on to play every week. We’ll either be overrun with him, Powell and Vrancic as our midfield, or one of the other two will have to be left out. All of which is an extremely depressing way to kick off the season.

Does Allen have any experience as a Captain?
I was under the impression that Batth captained Wolves during their promotion season and that Smith did the same for Huddersfield.
Truthfully, I have no idea how much extra work being a captain is nowadays to be honest.

I agree. Alongside the dismal lack of signings this looks ominous for the new season. I think Allen has been one of the reasons for the poor form. His clockwork mouse like movement around the pitch and now captain fills me with dread.

In that regard I’m sure he’ll be a competent skipper.

Joe our ever present midfield defensive shield, breaking up play. This is not going to end well is it.

I can't see why people would want Allen. He's got no leadership qualities at all. Was Shawcross ever vocal on the pitch though. He never looked like a leader when we played and was very quiet for a Captain, but he must have had some qualities that weren’t obvious to be chosen. I recall this myth doing the rounds at the time, possibly because he wasn't one for performative John Terry vein-bulging pashunbollocks. He was constantly organising the rest of the team and the back four in general. Geoff Cameron basically had to wait for Ryan to tell him where to stand most games.

It’s always been a big load of bollocks. PASHUN!!!!!! But what about Ryan being in the refs ear at a free kick 40 yards from where he was? NO PASHUN!!!!! What about Ryan calmly talking to refs all they way through a game and moving any other Stoke players away? SHOUTEEN PASHUN
