If everyone started to just "run up fast and twat it" I think there would be a parallel universe where we are saying why don't we start using more technique and guile in our penalties Otherwise known as the last three decades

Shearer just ran up to the ball and smacked it into the back of the net. How is it that these players including the young ones, who are all on massive money, do not have the ability to consistently make it really difficult for the goalkeeper to save the ball ?

How is it that these players including the young ones, who are all on massive money, do not have the ability to consistently make it really difficult for the goalkeeper to save the ball ? 1. That's not only what Shearer did. He generally hit them with power but his accurate placing was as important as, or more important than, the power 2. Shearer missed plenty penalties 3. Rashford does have the ability to consistently make it really difficult for the goalkeeper to save the ball. It's actually what he does, and it's why GS brought him on. His conversion record so far is possibly better than Shearer's 4. Money does not make you infallible 5. There's no accounting for the pressure of a penalty shoot-out to win a nation a first trophy in three generations 6. I don't know why Sancho and Saka were anywhere near the list of takers

Should be banned. Rules should be set that a player has to maintain a constant speed on entering the penalty box on the 18 yd line and up to the ball. Any significant speeding or slowing down equates to a voided penalty. It would stop all the messing about. Or they could make it interesting and do blind fold football for the taker and keeper using a ball with bells in it. It would all be in slow motion and entertaining to watch. Who hears best wins.😂 Am pretty sure they do in the sense that has to be a constant run towards the ball. Must look that up what makes it worse is when a player stutters causing a keeper to move, the keeper gets punished

Best penalty savers maybe, not necessarily best keepers. Some of the better keepers were never great penalty savers.

Always thought Paul Gallagher had something with his back to goal stance - cleared his head to decide what he was going to do - ignored any goalie antics on the line - waited for the whistle and then bang
Not sure of his stats but although it looked a bit odd I could see his thinking

Baumann in Escape to Victory made the mistake of squaring up to Hatch before taking his second pen to win the game. A lot to be said for Gallagher's approach.

Harry's penalty was one of the best I've ever seen bravo Harry 👏 take note the rest. Have to agree although when I saw how he was shaping up to take it I was getting ready to protect my windows in croydon but two keepers arent saving that.

That technique is slightly starting to come in as the takers and ‘keepers try to psych each other out - Pickford actually did it (miraculously) for Jorginho’s the other night - but it’s still very rare for a goalie to just watch the ball and react to its movement. They either guess a side (old school) or try to read the kicker before/as he strikes the ball.

Infact how many penalties would be save by just standing in the middle and not moving, over the season I think it would be a few.

It's a constant arms race. Well ok arms and legs race

I don't get why they all started so straight either? Think most of them seemed to take so many steps straight back from the ball then so many steps to the left/right depending on their foot dominance? Found it very reminiscent of the way Johnny Wilkinson used to line up for his penalty kicks in Rugby,so maybe some sport's psychology routine to help develop a degree of automaticity? Didn't give us the same robotic consistency as JW obviously.....😢

Easy way to solve our 'penalty curse' misery:
BRING BACK THE 'GOLDEN GOAL'!!!
Stolen traffic cones for goal posts, pitch black outside, yer Mum shouting for you to come in, "Next goal wins eh?" Worked every time in 70s Waltham Cross!!!
(With apologies to Paul Whitehouse )

No run up required by this legend The prob with that was that is was highlighted so much, Joel Bats I think it was saved one as he said he knew exactly where it was going in 86 when Fernandez the Paraguay keep saved Hugo Sanchez pen he said the same as was a Pepsi ad on in Mexico 86 round the clock showing Sanchez taking a penalty so he dived that way

Keepers have restrictions put on them, why not the taker? The only restriction a keeper has is staying on his line until the kick has been taken. Up to that point he is allowed to move along his line but to a canny penalty taker this can work to the takers advantage if he does a slight hesitation during his run up and as the keeper commits he places the ball opposite side. Unfortunately Rashford got it wrong.

In Shearers day the keeper could not move until the ball had been kicked giving him little chance of saving a well hit penalty. With rule change few years ago the keeper can now move sideways before the kick is taken. A good keeper will have done his homework on penalty takers and also body language as the player runs up may give him an indication which way to dive fractions before the kick is taken. IMO These days a keeper has a much better chance of saving a penalty because he can move before the kick is taken,

(With apologies to Paul Whitehouse ) In 60s on Wolstanton Marsh we played well into the darkness because road lighting on Dimsdale Parade gave us instant floodlights.

IMO These days a keeper has a much better chance of saving a penalty because he can move before the kick is taken, Carl Muggleton was a great pen stopper and learned from one of the best, Paul Cooper. He claimed he taught him a secret he never quite100% revealed but said involved the way the player leaned his head on run up. I think Muggleton saved 5 out of 6 at one stage

Why is it that whenever an opposing player does the stuttering run-up against Stoke or England, they never ever miss? Watching it is always a long, agonising death as our keeper slowly slumps the wrong way and the ball trickles safely into the net, and the stuttering run-up bloke smugly runs away wagging his finger in the air. Yet whenever you see an England player try it, you know with cast iron certainty he's going to miss. Apart from Jorginho?

I guess it didn't register because within a few seconds we had lost anyway.

Dad always said the hardest penalties to save were the ones hit at speed and in the corners …he said you had a split second to decide where you thought it was going and commit to the dive, and try to cover as much of the goal area as you can,. If the penalty was struck hard you might get your fingertips to it, but chances were it would still go in. All the players should be practicing penalties at the end of training,

Big fan of Lyle Taylor's technique. Don't think a goalkeeper could ever complain about this run-up..

maybe they should try this out That makes me very sad to watch. There’s a lot of reasons why football (soccer) hasn’t reached the heights in the US as it has in Europe, but America’s insistence to do things “their way” at times often doesn’t help.
