That's really sad news, saw him play in early 80s and always liked him as he was always a big rock fan also , had family lived near Ipswich and used to see him at gigs there , got up on stage with Gillan and sang along at one show! RIP Paul

Great Ipswich team that, PM, Eric Gates, Alan Brazil, the two Dutch lads in midfield, Osman and Butcher at the back. Kevin Beattie.
There's not many sides from 40 years back l can nearly list in full.

Was a few wasn't there? Keven Beattie was Michael Caine's body double, Kevin O'Callaghan played the Allies keeper despite not being a keeper and Laurie Sivell was the German keeper as well as Wark and Osman who were in the allies team. His long hair wouldn't have passed of course

A concern to any of us who rocked a mullet back in the day that the grim reaper is calling on this generation. RIP Paul Mariner

RIP Paul and condolences to his family.
Always liked him as a player and Ipswich Town were my second team in the early 70s (liked their kit/style of play) then Beattie broke my fave John Ritchie's leg thus they dropped out of favour with me. Though he played for them a bit later on i started to like them again and a great side at the time.

Saw him score in a qualifier for 82 against Hungary and had Ferenc Puskas on the pitch before the game That's right bit of a messy goal. Their keeper had a bit of a flapper that night after having a blinder for Sporting Lisbon think it was v Soton in the UEFA Cup a few weeks before. He was time wasting and at one stage stopped to talk to a Soton fan behind the goal whilst taking a goal kick to wind them up and a fan threw a sandwich at him

Mick Mills would have been ideal as a British officer type. Him and Mariner both in the squad of course. Osman wasn't

Paul was my favourite England player in the early 80s. He could hold it up, run the channels, and was a very flexible goal scorer. Immensely saddened to hear this, thoughts to his family and fans, and RIP Paul.

Still remembered fondly by the fans of his first professional club, Plymouth Argyle. He left them for Ipswich about a year before I moved down there.
Less successful in a short stint as their manager a few years back.
Lovely player - R.I.P Paul

To think, going into the '86 world cup, the England No 9 shirt was up for grabs, Paul Mariner and Mark Hateley each could have made it theirs. Gary Lineker was pretty much on the margins. Two successful world cups and the rest is history.

So, so many respects being paid over here, especially the Boston area. Players who have finished their careers and talking about what a wonderful influence he was as a man and a mentor.
In an age where statistics, I don’t know, Xgs, all that. I wonder. This is purely anecdotal but I reckon that that hair do was worth .004 goals every season.
