Yorkshire Post quote Laws as saying he may be forced to sell him in January. One big-name departure could be Republic of Ireland midfielder Whelan, who has refused to sign a new Owls deal and will be available on a Bosman free next summer. Wednesday, with debts of around £30m, would have to consider cashing in on the midfielder – who is reported to be interesting new Derby County manager Paul Jewell – in January rather than lose him for nothing next summer. Laws said: "Whelan is another worry. We have still got to work within the same framework, nothing has changed in that sense, the finances haven't changed. "We will have to sit tight and see what happens in January. If we get an offer for Glenn – and he is still not prepared to sign – then we are going to have to look at it realistically. "But again, those questions have to be answered and I'm sure the board are very aware of the situation. I'm sure next week a lot of things will become more clearer." Teamtalk suggest, on the back of this, that Stoke are "ready to pounce". Is this 2+2=5 guesswork, that he would now consider us as a viable destination? He seems to have been tenuously linked with Derby, Bolton and all sorts in recent weeks. tinyurl.com/27a7xr

well this seems the ideal time, to buy him we could get him for an excellent price, with Sheff Wed being in financial turmoil, we need to strengthen our midfield, and Glenn Whelan in my opinion would be an excellent signing.

If there's anything in the Derby link, we wouldn't have a chance though, would we?
Even if Jewell's just planning for this league next year, Whelan could be a very good value-for-money purchase for them.

well obviously alot depends on that, hopefully derby wont make an approach, but if they do, i think we still have a chance, i mean derby look like there going down, where as we look like we have a cracking chance of promotion.
It's a similar situation to griffin, and i bet he wishes he signed for stoke now.

Thing is though Jewell has gone to Derby to try and save their bacon so to speak. Billy Davies bought championship players to the club and subsequently was elbowed for it. Will Jewell do the same thing ???

If no prem club comes in we have a good chance you would think.
even if Derby came in 99% of CCC players would go there than sign for another CCC club. If they do will & Derby go down then there is a good chance another prem club would buy him in the summer.
Got to factor in probablity of getting pitch time of course (guaranteed starter here)

He certainly seems a better, younger, less injury-prone potential signing than Nigel Quashie.
I wonder how much Wednesday would ask for him in January, given that he can walk for nothing come June?

Sounds promising. Wasn't an inspirational performance at the Brit by any stretch of the imagination, but if reports are to be believed, he could be the answer.
