Fans today, post Premier league are aghast and underwhelmed at the class of signings we have to make now. Go back to this era and it was the same with Mama, a failed Gilligham striker who couldn't score, but what a man, the perfect foil for Ric Sometimes underwhelming signings are the best

I bloody loved Mama, he could turn any long punt up field into the perfect flick for Ric to run onto. People would moan about his finishing but he was there to put goals on for others, not himself.
I have his away shirt from the promotion season, signed by the whole squad. All I had to do was do a Christian Eriksen quarter way through the season. I woke up in hospital three weeks later with Mama's shirt!

Book is worth a read as well. Unless you're Michael Duberry.

A God awful finisher. He linked up well with Ric, but he did only score 4 league goals in our promotion season, and 3 in our survival.

Listen to John Parkin on Under the Cosh talk about Mama. Sorry, don't know how to do a link. Can someone find it please?

If when we signed him, somebody would’ve said to you that he’d play and score in the Premier League, you would have thought they were insane.
Definitely one of the good guys and will always be remembered fondly for his contribution.

Weird though it might sound, that really wasn't what he was in the team to do. Yet he was still absolutely critical to us in the promotion season and the following year.

Mama's lad has signed for Stoke academy back in May & is highly regarded. A Sidibe may once again grace our famous red & white stripes 🟥⬜🟥⬜!

this might be an unpopular opinion but Big Mama was more effective in the Prem than he was in the Championship.
Not sure whether that was due to centre halves being a bit more cultured in the Prem rather than the rough and tumble type in the championship but I always felt prem defences struggled against him more.

Absolute legend.
Turned into prime Lewandowski against Bristol and gave us one of the best mentals ever with the winner against Villa.
Love Mama.

He was there to run around after Ric so that the latter didn’t have to. I really didn’t like Mama. Seemed like a great guy, but you need more than work ethic to be a sustainable option long term, especially as Fuller wasn’t exactly prolific. In the end, the amount of sitters he missed that first Prem season, and especially after coming back from injury the year after, was enough reason for me to form the opinion that his bad outweighed his contributions to other areas. However, he was part of some of the most memorable moments I have, so I can put that aside and respect the hell out of him. His pure size added to our threat in the box, if nothing else.

Nobody's prolific in a Pulis team to be fair though. They're not set up to be. He was there as you say to be a foil. He played a defensive role to an extent, won the flick ons but also did a brilliant job creating space for Ric by drawing defenders away from him. In those two Pulis Championship seasons, more often than not we looked a much worse side when Mama didn't play. Slightly different in the Prem - he was still effective but Kitson should never have been asked to play the same role and it was clear we'd need an upgrade pretty soon, which ultimately turned out to be Walters.

I think his confidence improved once he scored in that first prem home game & I also think he realised there simply wasn't any/much pressure on him to score goals

a great servant to the club even after injuries finished him, last time i saw him and spoke with him he said he was working scouting french kids and talent for the academy
had a proper father ted moment with him, saw him in the potteries by his wifes cake shop, had a chat and a photo, then he got in the lift with me and it was a little awkward, said bye and he was parked next to me outside next......
when all is said and done he is a thoroughly nice man

In an era when a lot of players are up their backsides, what a nice man, also turned out just after he was nearly killed from being pulled through that glass window.
