Watched part one of this last night and it was gripping but a tough watch at times
so many questions that it raises

Agreed. I think Sean Bean's performance accurately depicts how any of us would react to being sent down for the first time, especially if you'd had a rather sheltered upbringing. Stephen Graham also superb as ever. Typical Jimmy McGovern writing. Gritty and realistic.

If you enjoy this read Jeffrey archers prison diaries. A great read and fairly honest view of life behind bars

Distressing confronting and brilliant. Several demonstrations of how hopelessly dysfunctional the prison system is.
McGovern's things often end on a hopeful note.

Just finished watching this last night and for the most part, it was utterly absorbing. Easily the finest performance of Sean Bean’s career. ** SPOILER ** I felt the last half of the final episode was a bit rushed. More could have been done with Jackson’s attack on Mark and Kav’s interjection. I did feel great anger about Eric’s plight. The justice system sent him down with no acknowledgement about how restricted information on his son’s whereabouts got to the prisoners.

Eric's plight is indicative of the defective spiral the prison system breeds. It's the sheer negligence of a structure which fails to even support itself. Mark's time with Kav was touching. The thing is it might be one of the only times in Kav's life someone had been kind to him.

Just finished watching this myself, really good.
I used to be a Prison Officer and to be fair had quite a few bad experiences - the programme was that realistic it actually bought a few things back up - brilliant TV.

Stephen Graham's a brilliant actor. He is. An Oscar awaits. A fine actor, but he can only ever play the role of a Scouser. His accent is just too thick. He was in a drama last year called White House Farm where he played a Welsh detective, and even then he couldn't help sounding Scouse.

He was on Jonathon Ross and it was brilliant. The Irishman for example. His prodigy Jodie Comer is too.
