Cue a long debate between people on one side who believe the original Ronaldo was better and Cristiano isn't fit to lace his boots, and people on the other side who are wrong.

The “original” Ronaldo was a player I’d never seen the like of before. He was just awesome! The other Ronaldo is, well, one of the greatest players ever. I’d only go for Christiano Ronaldo due to his longevity in the game at the highest level but like you say it’s a fair debate. Some will say longevity counts for nothing when talking about who’s better but I think it does.

Both were exceptional players, but I agree - to be able to stay at the top for so long is a mark of greatness. I guess it might be boiled down to "how many world cups did you play in?" (although that does not take the impact of injuries into account).

He was in Italy at a time when Italian football was still very good (97-02). But Cristiano has won three league titles in three big leagues, including La Liga when Barcelona were fire. Has a player ever accomplished more than that, at least in the modern era? He's still not through. I wonder if he'll go to a different country and do it again, though really only PSG remains that would be worth it.

Well yeh and internationally you have to consider that Christiano Ronaldo has pretty much single handedly dragged Portugal to be one of the best sides in the world in the last decade, not that they don’t have other good players mind, whereas “original” kind of had it on a plate and was sort of the icing on the Brazilian cake. Not sure that makes sense🤷🏻♂️

Awesome player...one of the few to have played at Barca, Real, Inter and AC Milan and is liked by fans of all (maybe a bit less so at Barca)

I named my Son Ronaldo hoping he’ll be the third incarnation and make me rich.
He’s doing well at the shot fields in Milton.

El Phenomenon, coolest footballer ever to play surely. Seemed to love football, a huge personality and moved so smoothly for someone of his size.
They're so different though.
Cristiano is immense, and a bit of a machine in every sense really. Not so joyful to watch but you have to be in awe of his drive, efficiency and numbers.
Imagine a player with R9's talent and R7's drive.

Hmm having had a quick look, both Ronnies have played in 4 WC Finals, although in his first set Ronaldo did not actually play. But then it gets interesting ..... Ronnie Ronnie - Played 19 Scored 15 Lost 3 his team never finished lower than 5th and were in 3 finals winning twice Chris Ronnie - Played 17 Scored 7 Lost 5 his team only finished above 11th once (his first WC)
Hmm, I change my vote! 2 others with 4 WC Finals:
Pele - Played 14, Scored 12 Lost 1 His team won it 3 times Maradonna - Played 21, Scored 8, Lost 5 His team won once and were runners-up once Messi - Played 19, Scored 6, Lost 4 his team were losing finalists once.
Pele for me!

If Best had been playing in a team like Brazil, lord knows what he would have achieved.

By that stick, Vardy should be in for a shout over the last few years. I truly believe that players should move around to show that they can do it wherever they go to be considered as the best of the best, but it doesn’t have to be in the Premier League, which is rarely more than a two horse race these days.

Serie A is a really tough league . Respect to the likes of Ronaldo and Lukaku , for banging in the goals in the prem , then going to serie A and doing the same . That's hard You have to be some player , to cut it in the prem and serie A

Real/Original Ronaldo is my 2nd favourite player ever (after Hoekstra who was just a class above all these others). The step overs were superb - I think Desailly said he knew what he was going to do every time but I’m not having it Marcel.
Cristiano has been excellent, consistent over numerous years etc. but he wasn’t Ronaldo - someone said earlie in the thread he was the icing on the cake, he won the 2002 World Cup with that display in the final (showing what they missed in 98)
If he hadn’t done his knee relatively early in his career who knows what he could have achieved.
