Might as well treat it like a real game given we're going to be allowed in I guess technically Bursik could play in goal for this one, or even Blondy? But I'm presuming something like this line up: Hemfrey Coates Jones Macari Taylor C Adebambo Malone Sparrow Norton Varian Wright-Phillips Or will Goodwin get the nod? Or Taylor D. Not sure what formation we usually go, or if the POMO order will be in place

Bloody gutted im at work for this game.
We've drawn the last 2 games against them, so hopefully we've sussed them out for the victory. The team is on a great run which shows you that we have some good talent coming through.
Im going for a 2-1 win to Stoke

But I would imagine they will show it - maybe to announce once the tickets are all gone or some time on Monday.

I also wondered what we will do with the regular first teamers who are under 23. I think I'd be tempted to start with a squad composed of the U23 players who have done so well to reach the play offs. But I don't see why we shouldn't have players like Bursik, Souttar, Brown and Matondo on the bench. It is quite possible when the teams are announced, that Sunderland will include players who are regular first teamers rather than U23 regulars. A bench for us with a lot of first team experience would enable us to react if this happened and we felt we wanted to even things up in the second half - Pity Ty Campbell isn't fit enough for the bench!

If it's to be a celebration of SCFC's Academy then there really is no point in calling in players that haven't been trained in it at any point like Matondo, who jumped straight into the first team and isn't even owned by the club. Brown might have appeared in the team in order to gain fitness (as did Tymon and TOB, who're also under 23), but he hasn't trained with it. Souttar and Bursik at least are products of the academy, but neither has featured in an academy team this season (I'm not sure if Bursik was in towards the end of the term, but if he was it was just as a convenient staying fit choice), so it would really be putting down the players that have. We might have done it if we were desperate to locate players good enough, but this really isn't the case, gk and cd are two of the positions we are spoilt for choice. So the team ought to be the ones that have featured this spring minus the various trialists. Forrester was the captain for much of the season, until he was promoted and finally made his debut in the CL side. I think it would be far more appropriate to use him, although again Taylor and Macari have done well in his absence.

I take you point about playing graduates of the Academy and that is what I would use as my starting team. But, if our opponents in the semi, or in the final if we reach it, were to play a significant number of first team players, then I think having a few first teamers on the bench would make sense. A final point - in regular U23 games clubs are allowed to field a few over age players. I hope that this is NOT allowed in the playoffs or it would make a mockery of the whole process. Imagine if any of the Premier League clubs in our division of the U23 league decided to field a few regular Prem players, it would be a farce.

Then it bcomes a question of whether Brown and Matondo will strengthen or weaken the u23s..? Matondo or DWP? I would choose the latter any day. In the case of overage players would they not severely weaken the team, either because their quality is too low or because someone like Powell might struggle to take the game seriously? We saw how even Shawcross refused to get involved when he played. I for one will hope that the first team manager will have as little to say as possible, i.e. nothing.

I’m not advocating 1st team players get forced on the academy manager , coaches .. they’d probably walk , nor am I saying 1st team players must be be used ( especially without the 1st team managers permission) he’d walk also but I’d want to 1) understand fully the rules of the competition and what players on the clubs books can and can’t be used ( and Sunderlands) 2) understand what the short , medium and long term plan is for the academy 3) understand any playing benifits prem 1 would bring to the club , and academy as a whole ( ie if promoted I presume the aim would be to stay up ? ) and in the short term these players .. is that standard better ( or too strong ;/ worse ( too weak ) would it produce the development path identified by the club 4) Would prem1 status make recruitment of future higher quality academy players easier or more likely ..or is it merely cosmetic 5) What if any ‘First team’ players are eligible .. and if asked for those players will the 1st team manager want them playing , or would he want them resting up now the season is over to avoid injury ahead of pre season .. request comes from the academy / club ;, I wasn’t suggesting the 1st team manager imposes unwanted players..but if the academy want first team players they have to ask the first team manager .. 6) What is likely to be Sunderlands’s approach , do they have players they’ll use to ‘strengthen’ their team .. can a gentleman’s agreement be reached , is that the done thing at this level I don’t now enough about the clubs ‘bigger picture’ aims or youth football , or the rules of the comp , and the differance between prem and prem2 , a director of football would own most of those points and more ( and importantly the answers) , I believe we have an academy director , though we seem to change them quicker than the weather Once you have answers to those points and more, the academy manager makes his team selection would I like the players who’ve got us so close their day in the sun . ..I’d love nothing more , they deserve it .. the club may have different aims , views that’s all I was saying ..and if different then there’s conversations to be had

Sunderland are playing the first leg of their Division One play-off semi-final on Wednesday, so I wouldn't expect them to play any regular first team players, in fact I would think they are more likely to leave out one or two of their better U23 players to ensure they have the strongest squad possible for that match.

Yep , let’s hope arrangements are needed for the final regular YouTube coverage of U23s games has been one of the few good things to have come out of covid , it can always be improved .. but it’s been a refreshing start , people’s consideration of others in the first lockdown was the other , though that’s reverted to kind once the novelty wore off ..let’s hope coverage of the U23s doesn’t follow the same route next season and instead continues , and continues to develop

As a point of information why don't U23 teams have the players' names as well as numbers on the back of their shirts? I accept that when we play triallists the shirt would have to say triallist on the back, but I could live with that if I could more easily identify the contracted players.

Just study the teamsheet on the matchday page at the club homepage. It's quickly learnt! I'm a traditionalist in some ways and prefer shirts with the numbers 1-11. I dislike it when you see players running around with numbers like 38, 47, 59 etc.

I'll be down there tomorrow. Can't wait to watch a match inside a stadium at long last. Can someone explain the format of these play offs to me? From what i gather it a 1 legged playoff which seems very strange. With us being at home and infront of 2000 of our own fans surely that gives us a massive unfair advantage over Sunderland. If its a draw at full time do we have extra time, penalties or a replay?
