I've no idea, perhaps something as simple as the idea of a better life in Europe? Anyone who takes to a boat like that with limited supplies of water, food and fuel must be pretty desperate. So not oppression, fear for their lives, just economic migrants then. Nothing better than a sweeping generalisation to try and explain something that you have no idea about. Good work.

Are, if you are prepared to put your life and your families life in danger for money well simply that's your decision. And presumably one that no-one takes lightly, hence the assumption that some compassion would be normal towards someone who's done so and ended up spending three weeks in a boat with the dead and dying, but each to their own, obviously. If you are stupid/selfish enough to put your own life or your families lives in danger for financial gain then that's your look out, why should they expect compassion it's self inflicted for no other reason than money is it normal to put yourself and your families lives in obvious danger for financial gain ?

I guess if the options are that limited in your own country that the promise of a better life is worth risking taking to sea in a small boat with inadequate water and food, then that suggests things weren't that great at home. Similarly, trusting yourself to the back of a truck and ultimately suffocating to death would also suggest a certain desperation. Like I said, most people would feel some compassion towards these people, rather than scorn or criticism, but not all obviously.
