Our board waits and waits and waits until.....we’re in the shit! Laugh at Watford, all their managers, still above us and pushing on playing decent football. That’s just one example, can’t be arsed with anymore as I’m on annual leave tomorrow and it’s JD time! That’s a sign how bad this season has been! I even let the Mrs turn over to one born every fucking minute in the last 10 minutes before I knew there were 6 added on. I miss stoke city!

The problem is we have a massive amount of dead wood that MON wants off the books, and it’s up to the hierarchy to somehow facilitate that. If they don’t any manager that comes in will be hamstrung it’s as simple as that......

The interesting thing to me, and this seems to get forgotten, is that a Championship football club is a multi million pound business. At Stoke people are paid to do a job at the club, and ostensibly understand the concepts of problem analysis and solving. These are highly paid roles and it their job to help and advise each other to keep the club moving forward.
Its going to be quite something watching them try to sort this mess out.

I went to my first band rehearsal instead of watching. We're not all back in the studio until Monday but I took a gamble.

Of course the current squad, built on frees and low costs, is not as good as one that has Etebo, Ndiaye, Woods et al in it, all in well paid non playing roles. You're going to have to trust him on making intelligent purposes when the budget becomes somewhat better from July 2022 onwards. You say - and I'm not in disagreement - that the players he's bought so far have for the most part been no good/deadwood. But MON's hands have been very much tied. I'm sure he would have liked to go out and buy Toneys and Pukkis (who despite having come to EA on a free did not come cheap), but the club just weren't able to do so. It wouldn't really be fair to judge a man whose hands are well tied behind his back for not doing a merry dance...

The problem is never going to improve until things change at the very top we need proper football people running things with ambition who know how to spend money wisely & employ the right people. Until this happens the club will carry on with this downward spiral.

Christ the knicker wetting is beyond infantile. We have 40-50% of the senior squad out injured, with others like Clucas working their way back to fitness. Powell has amazingly stayed fit for nearly all of the season, but it starting to look jaded. We are saddled with a load of deadwood that nobody wants and we have to cut our cloth accordingly until they are gone due to FFP, so no imminent big signings. We have to make the best of it and chopping and changing manager is not the answer. To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if MON decided he had had enough as his hands are tied every way you look. Despite that and if everyone is fit for next season, then we should be ok. Hold fast until end of 2022 season and then the reboot can begin...

Likewise Brown, is young, pacey and can score a goal (much better in recent weeks) but again there is plenty of room for him to improve. The problem can actually be tracked back to the time we ,suddenly switched to the “ Sustainable model either because we ski the appetite for risk wothbthe Imbula and Wimmers or beciase we actually believed the Nonsense we could omg terms beat the market we were in due to our “ well run “ myth . For me now the whole thing needs ripping up and for tho those who say who ? I’d say I’d give this a go
Scholes , O’Neil. , Delap all out , promote the existing FD to the board as FD and Administrator bean counter we dont have many beans anyway ) Mark hughes in as technical director on the board ,with overall responsibility for all football matters Bowen as first team coach , Eddie N as coach Holden could stay , all have something to prove , all are different calibre then their three predecessors and have a network that could bring some decent loan players , or same set up and try for Terry as the manager and Bowen as the Coach we invested million in crap player after crap player and this time we need to start at the root of the problem.
Of course I know he made mistakes but very few know the choices he was faced with when his list for whatever reason became unachievable and his overall record is good with finding players from (Samba through to odemwinge and Arnieand the Southampton crew) , others have shows that’s inevitable we might just get him because of it and he’s a different calibre than all the pool we would inevitably be drawn into am much more of a front foot man and wining winning games than the usual subjects
Accept he’s not a course and distance winner but neither was Benitez and Bowen’s work at Reading is looking good , he’s hughes is a different calibre to the likes of Rowett Jones and O’Neil still only seven I think Have won more premier league games and location. Appetite and insight into us all work .
If the personalities aren’t right then still follow the model and different TD and Terry or lampard but one they know and are comfortable with we need some winners and some proper football people, some energy in that boardroom and dug out tight now we’ve same process , confusion , inexperience (and on occasions sheer buffoonery armed with a now obsolete financial nuclear bomb that if they could use they’d undoubtedly blow themselves up with again ) at club level in this league apathy

They will do a job and graft and have the odd good game but thats it. Preferable to Voke & McClean, yes, but fill your team with too many players like them and we will be hanging around the wrong end of this division for a while longer yet (unless we go down)...

Imbula, Berahino, Wimmer were his signings as were cretins like Jese and bad gambles like Zouma, Fletcher and Choupo (you could throw Allen into that as well). He can't get credit for the good signings and be absolved of the bad ones.

I get that but you could argue that the rotting teak and mahogany MON wanted off the books was better than the chip board he has brought in to replace it! He replaced Smith with Collins, partly to give Collins more game time and exposure but mainly because he clearly doesn't trust Smith. He cast aside Batth to make Souttar his first choice centre half, he relegated Vokes to a man who comes on with 20 minutes to go when we're chasing the game and Powell, Norton and Brown are above him in the pecking order as strikers. He doesn't want to use these players, if he could click his fingers they'd never wear the red and white stripes again I'm certain of that. It's been a real juggling act this season, he could have absolutely done better at times no doubt about it but I just don't see anyone getting a tune out of this lot until we cull the squad in June 2022, Wilder, Potter, Pearson, Cook or whoever.........

I think MON has some excuse when it comes to buying poor players; he has no money, he has too big a squad already, who wants to join a club on its way down the league? The injuries is a different matter. A business that has lot s of accidents is not just "unlucky". There is something fundamentally wrong, which could be lack of fitness, poor and inadequate warm up procedures, sloppy approach to the job, lack of care and attention, poor training, the list goes on. Any manager or organization who thinks it is just "bad luck" is kidding itself. Any health and safety professional will tell you, accidents don't just happen. Maybe the change in assistant manager will bring change. Last night I saw the same problem that we have had since Hughes tenure. A bunch of men who are not really bothered, who are going through the motions, many in the twilight of their careers, who were just "doing their job", but doing it without any intention, purpose, commitment, organization, finesse, etc. The young players are probably desperate the old players leave/retire, or a better club comes along and lifts them out of the dross.

I find it difficult to equate health and safety protocols to professional sport- wearing a yellow jacket, not picking up a heavy box in the wrong way, fixing stickers to say hold the railings etc is a world away from a sporting context where players are being asked to purposefully push themselves to their physical limits in every game. We have no evidence for their being repeated injuries during training, players not being prepared properly or having the availability to the best training facilities., The vast majority of the injuries have come through game time injuries which happens and is a combination of the individual physical condition of the player (we are all not robots) and just plain bad luck (Campbell/Fletcher/Collins as examples where impact injuries occurred). So no I don't think taking that into account is kidding yourself- this season we have been particularly unlucky, more than other teams and that has had an impact on the overall performance of the team. I don't see how anyone could see it any differently other than trying to find a stick to beat the club with. As a consequence of the above the continuity in the team goes and the level of performance drops as players are coming in and out of the team. I disagree about lack of effort last night, it was just obvious that the 11 on the field were disjointed and not the 11 we would have fielded if everyone was fit.

The only tiny bit of slack I'm willing to give this manager, right now, is that he's still lumbered with some deadwood.
We need to remember, however, that a good chunk of the deadwood is not even in the club 'stinking the place out'. It's out on loan. Crippling us financially, but not so much on a matchday.
MON is obviously going to reach a point, where he cannot hide behind the deadwood issue any longer.
Even given this 'poor team' he's working with...there's no excuse for finishing behind Luton, for example. Even with these 'deadwood players' he's having to abide.
It's interesting I suppose, that Sam Vokes is one of these deadwoods we're talking about. And yet, the manager, for some inexplicable reason, chooses to use him over and again. Pointlessly. He can't have it both ways.
And a fair slice of this 'poor team' he's bought in himself btw.
We're entering into excuse-making territory if we're not careful.

Whether we make the right decisions on the field, transfers etc well that is the coaching/managers department.

Smith, Batth, Vokes are all players that he would move on in a heartbeat, how can he not use them currently even if it's a 10 minute cameo for Vokes, we're running out of players to fill the bench? I suppose that's where you blur the lines between 'deadwood' and 'players who are not just good enough'..imo they are different. The deadwood, that we keep telling ourselves we've been lumbered with, as I have said, are largely not around the club (Wimmer, Bauer, etc). Yes, they are creating an issue in terms of big contracts, which in turn impacts FFP, etc. To that end, the manager's hands are tied financially, he has to shop in a certain market. Smith and Batth are players that I wouldn't call 'deadwood'. They are just players that are not very good. Smith by the way, captained a team in the Premier League not so long ago, not that that's a recommendation, just pointing out that he's got/had ability and leadership qualities. Vokes I would put in the deadwood pile - £9m-worth of lumbering oaf, on big wages, delivering zero. Back to the manager's hands being tied - he spunked £2.25m of money we couldn't really afford to waste, on a player that until very recently, looked League Two quality. Whether Brown becomes a player, remains to be seen. Outside of that, he's signed a bit-part player from Blackpool, an non-prolific 'big name' Centre Forward, a journeyman midfielder that can only compete for 60 minutes, a free Leftback from Sheff Weds who was free for a reason, re-signed Chester (which at the time was greeted with derision on here), a goalkeeper on loan, that was admittedly an emergency, but he has then played him despite 1) not being our player, combined with 2) the 'keeper injury situation sorting itself, and 3) he's probably the worst of the 3 we have on the books - oh, and a winger from Schalke who has looked like he has crash landed in the wrong sport. So whilst he can bemoan having his hands tied, it's hardly a ringing endorsement of his abilities to grow and improve a squad to take us forward. I dread to think what he would have churned up with £10m burning a hole in his pocket. And onto the Vokes thing, there have been multiple occasions where he's used him, and people have been left scratching their heads as to why? I wouldn't have even used him last night - he brings zilch to the table. He's toss. He's like Dave Bamber & Billy Whitehurst's love child, and even then, he's been a disappointment to his parents. As I said earlier, this manager will earn his stripes (or not) when this deadwood thing is buried in the past. It's partly a myth anyway. Those players out on loan are not responsible for either the poor signings he's made, the poor team selections & tactics being employed, the absolutely hideous footballing spectacle, and the poor results over the majority of this season. I don't want him replaced today - who would be go for? - someone British? - anyone British and decent wouldn't come here - so we'd be looking in the same old shitpot. I wouldn't really lose any sleep either way, give him the whole of next season, and let's see....

Likely be given another pay rise! Stoke are a club that appears to reward failure afterall!!
