Basically can this be done easily and what would I need.....
I want to get a large solar panel on the shed roof to power garden lights as it will cost too much and will have to dig up part of patio to get mains electric to the top of the garden.

Depending on the style you want just try solar lights?

In my (admittedly limited) experience anything relying on solar power in this country is wank. Whatever you want lighting up, just use the mains. Lots less hassle and more importantly it will work.
