🤔 (Had a simular thread about this once, but couldn't find it.)
Went to my mother's place. I have no idea where the extremely low noise comes from. It always gives me ear pain. It so low you can actually only feel it inside your brain. My younger brother hears it as well, but not old mother or older brother.
It was the last time ever I tried to get some sleep, impossible. I will never spend the night again!!
Q: Could it be:
1) The food truck deliveries to Lidl 200 meters away? Low freq noise travels long distances and Lidl actually admitted to me the transports come during the night with large freezers (fruit etc) and let their engines running.
2) An anti-snoring machine. Every time the neighbours just below arrives and spend the night, it seems the noise increases. I know he had a huge snoring problem before. Nowadays I never hear him snore.
3) Home distilling equipment large scale at the ground floor? In the middle of the night more than a year ago I went out to look for the sound, to locate it, and discovered the wall to the ground floor appartment was actually vibrating when I put my hand on it.
In the appartment above the ground floor appartment is the snoring mister. And above that appartment is my mother's.
😷😱
Just for your information: I'm in a dialogue with Lidl about it, as I mentioned. The snoring man has managed to leave early each time, but I will catch him one day. The ground floor people never open.

I get a constant low rumbling in my ears like a car is idling outside, its called musical ears apparently it was driving me nuts for a while, now I'm used to it as it will not go away.

Thread title of the year so far!😀 I remember this Musik, thought it was on the “record posts on a thread” thread? Anyway I think my answer was Lidl but not sure you mentioned about a potential CPAP machine before. Is it possible the bottom floor has an amorous lady who enjoys pleasuring herself a bit too much?👀

And you have this wherever you go? It's called tinnitus. I have that too. Nowadays they at least have tuned their instruments. But the thread is about a noisy sound that's only there, not on the bus or at my place.

.... would have thought the man downstairs with the CPAP machine would be the most likely culprit. However, what would I know as I live in the rainforest in FNQ. The only things that keep me awake are the curlews

Fella I worked with tells a great story about something similar.
Gets called out to a tenant's flat a few times over a 'ringing' noise. Bring the caring, sharing organisation we worked for he persevered to try and fathom the problem.
Tenant says it's worst in the bedroom, can you take your shoes off and lie on the bed, that's when it's at at it's worst. He does as requested and still can't hear anything remotely like has been described.
The tenant gets frustrated and he suggests going into a neighbour's property which mirrors their layout. The neighbour being a friend agrees and the tenant marches into the bedroom, lies down and goes spare saying how on earth can't you hear that noise etc.
My colleague and the neighbour cottoned on it was the person rather than the place and they were diagnosed with tinnitus on visiting the doctor.

they were diagnosed with tinnitus on visiting the doctor. So when THEY couldn't hear the noise, it was because they had tinnitus? 🤠

The only things that keep me awake are the curlews I've stayed a few hours longer than expected today after all. I noticed the sound continues all day actually. Just like you I thought at least one of the sources was the CPAP machine, but now I don't know. I don't think he sleeps for 20 hours. More info: I asked my mother if she'd ever heard it and she said "no", then after a while ... "but I've felt it, it's very low frequency, more of a vibration phenomena", "and some nights I have disturbed sleep, very much so, but I don't know the reason why. Can be the vibration?"

The only things that keep me awake are the curlews I'm pretty convinced this CPAP machine have a role in this. Just read about those machines and it said the old machine could produce low freq up to 70 dB and the modern versions 29 dB. Some people can't hear it just feel it, so it's very low. Last time I checked I had no problem hearing very good at 11 hertz.

I have a CPAP - I doubt it's a straight-out NOISE source - But I could definitely see it causing a vibration which could trace from a table, up a wall etc. and result in that low hum your mother heard (from the wall or whatever vibrating).
Having said that, this thread sure took several entertaining turns! I am enthralled by the nymphomaniac theory. . . but then again, I'm enthralled by nymphomaniacs.

I had to read about CPAP machines this weekend and found out that newer types can produce 29 dB of a extremely low frequency noise. And an old type is even worse, much worse, up to an astounding 70 dB of terror. Since I'm sound sensitive, I have so called "glass ears", even 29 dB for 8-10 hours could be a nightmare then. Since the walls are made of concrete 29 dB in his appartment means 29 dB or even more in the room above, that's how it works if the frequencies are the right ones, my father who was an engineer explained to me once. If some doctor ever said to me I have to use a CPAP machine at night I'd rather choose the dangerous surgery. I'm pretty sure the neighbour down there gives me the pressure inside the middle ears at night, followed by a severe pain each night and in the morning and at last during the whole day! Now since I'm back home, no such pain during the first night, but I'm not yet fully recovered.

(And a nightmare to live with, unless you can live in the middle of a tundra). I know a person here in the US that has migraines triggered by sound - you probably are familiar with that. So now I can definitely understand why you need to get to the bottom of that and why you wouldn't want to be on a CPAP. You simply don't have that option. Yes and OLD types of CPAP ARE noisier and produce more vibration.

I thought it was gone at my mother's place, the noise that is.
But it was just some rest during the Christmas days. Now, it's back on, full volume. The skull vibrates during the night, it comes from below.
The tennants shouldn't pay rent here.
It must be someone on the ground floor with home distilling, large scale. I can't imagine it's a food store's fault. More people should have complained, the ones living closer to it.
Nightmare. The last night I spent the night here ever.
P.s It's not my hearing. Did a test recently, which showed 11-22.000 hertz. Amazing actually. Especially at the low end. But at the same time a reason I feel it's a nightmare?

There were a couple of nights where I live that a low rumble kept me awake all night. Earplugs didn't make a difference. I thought it was coming from one of the local industrial estates. Does your mother's place have a data centre nearby? This guy sues everyone: www.nytimes.com/2019/06/04/nyregion/nyc-loud-noisy.html

There is also a huge bakery, one of the largest in Sweden, large scale production. And I'd read an article about Marlborough England where some low freq noise kept people awake 3 km away! Not sure they solved it. However, Lidl has admitted they have problems with the lorry drivers who don't turn off their vehicles while delivering. But I doubt this to be the only noise source, since the kitchen is closest to Lidl, but one of the most quiet areas of the appartment.

One year later and ... exactly the same shit again! It was actually silent during the 3 Christmas days, what a relief. Then total nightmare on the night leading up to January the 1st 2022. We celebrated New Year and I was the only one who heard the loud low freq sound vibration. One of the worst experiences of my life - and that says A LOT! The sound during the whole(!) night was loud, so when I talked soft with a 50-55 dB level I couldn't hear myself! The others didn't hear it, they said, but they could FEEL it, especially when they hold the hand on my pillow, on the bed frame or on the madras. It was micro shaking. I heard and felt the sound in both ears and in my neck and spine; and the muscles in the ears, the face and eyes were getting real spasms! I still have them. The sound was drilling itself inside of me, in my spine. Like I had the same frequency as the sound myself. This time it went on every second continuosly. Imagine you're trying to sleep and suddenly you have two mosquitos circling outside both your ears and behind your head. That situation but with the lowest deepest frequency you could imagine.

Is there a local environment agency or something similar you can report the noise to?

Is there a local environment agency or something similar you can report the noise to? When it was noise truble at my own place, it seemed 30-40% of the neighbourhood heard and complained about the noise especially during the night. This was in the city center. I wrote to the Environmental Authority and it was fixed rather soon; it was some fans on top of the roof on the house opposite to ours. One of the guys working there is one of my brother's best mates. When it comes to suburbans I'm not sure who handles those cases, but I will find out soon. I will probably make a quick visit someday this week to her place in another matter and then also put up a note in the stairwell about the noise - simply ask if anyone hears it, if they have noticed the 15 meter long shaking wagon for composting outside the store at night, if someone has an old snoring machine and if so, ask them to replace it or move it and isolate the damn thing and so on. 🙄

That was going to be my next guess (The fans on the building) something to do with environmental control, an individual heating device, anything that tends to run for hours a day/night. But I'm sure that your investigation is past that by now. Also read something somewhere recently where there are people who can't live within 1000 feet of a server-farm. Apparently those things give out a hum/vibration at a certain frequency (both high & low) which can cause migraines.
Since you've detected a vibration I just wonder how close/far the source is, because if it's from something powerful enough, those things can travel pretty far. I hope you are able to identify/isolate it sooner than later.
