This evening Tues 29th BBC 2 are screening a documentary about a icon of British Football Jack Charlton at 0900 PM
I would normally at this time of night be surfing through the channels to find something to watch and eventually end up disappointed.
However I feel that I would like to view this but feel a little trepidation as I believe the program deals with his dementia problems as well as his great achievements both as a player and international manager.
I hope I have started a thread which will respect the respect he deserves and alerted anybody who was not aware of the TV screening.
I look forward to hearing comments and opinions. ⚓️

I can’t watch this because of the dementia element but it’s good that they’re trying to raise awareness.
It’s time we had a big breakthrough with dementia but I fear covid has put this and many others on the back burner, temporarily.

Shall watch on iPlayer as I follow Unforgotten on itv at the same time.
It looks from the trailer a mixture of fun and sadness. Seen a clip of a lady saying to him ' they love you in Ireland ' and Jack replies ' do they ' .
Definitely a must watch.

Fantastic watch so heartbreaking when he couldn't remember things. Didnt realize Mcgrath had a drink problem.
Also i will have been young in late 80s i knew he'd got that connection with Ireland but didnt realise for that long and he did do fairly well with them really.
Shame him Bobby had there ups and downs.

Lots of quotes but for me ;
I don’t want a centre half who can play football.
I want a centre half who can stop people from playing football .
Very simple and very profound

He would be worth a fortune nowadays though played through injuries most of his career.

Great watch. Will watch it again.
Two memorable quotes I remember about Jack were by Alf Ramsay.
When Jack asked him why he was chosen for the England team, Ramsay told him "I don't necessarily pick the best players, I pick the best team".
On another occasion when Ramsay was asked why Jack was in the team, Ramsay replied "Because he (Jack) doesn't trust Bobby Moore". The inference being Jack knew his role included covering for other players mistakes.

One of the best football documentaries you'll see. Brilliantly done.
The footage of Jack towards the end of his life was pretty hard to watch, but what a great bloke he came across as.
Not a dry eye in the house when he recognised Paul McGrath on the laptop
I watched this on the making of it a few days ago.

A fantastic documentary, hard to watch in parts, but showed enough of what a man jack was. An absolute legend. I once knew an Irish man friend of my grandad from Offaly, he was a sports nut, his greatest Irishman (1) Brian o Driscoll , (2) jack charlton. I made the mistake of pointing that glaring error out to him once. He gave me a good few hours of why jack was on the list of his greatest Irishman, hard to argue back after that. Rip Jack

Sensational player and smashing fella
