Not many commentators are synonymous with their sport as Murray Walker. At times more interesting than the sport itself
RIP

RIP Murray. I true great in his field and like so many of his era, he had a life before TV as opposed to the manufactured commentators and celebrities we see now.

Such a wonderful commentator, illuminated f1 in a way no one has before or since.
He also had a full career with Dunlop tyres before moving to commentary.
I'm sure he'll be commentating on anything & everything at the big race circuit in the sky
Rest in Peace

RIP to an Absolute Legend. His Commentry in the late 80s 90s to go with the action made me fall in love with Touring Cars with for me the 90s being the best era for it. Sopher Cleland Menu Harvey.
Chequered Flag waved one last time to a motorsport icon.

Much loved commentator in his day who made F1 such a great event.
Just thinking that as well as his enthusiasm for the sport he also made some hilarious gaffes. One of my favourites was :
"Are my eyes deceiving me or is Senna's car sounding a bit rough"
Some of his other top "Murrayisms"
"With half the race gone, there is half the race still to go."
"There are seven winners of the Monaco Grand Prix on the starting line today, and four of them are Michael Schumacher."
"And Michael Schumacher is 37 seconds ahead, so he can refuel the car, change all four wheels, take off his helmet, have a smoke and a cup of tea, and rejoin in first."
"Mansell is slowing it down, taking it easy. Oh, no he isn't! It's a lap record."
"You can cut the tension with a cricket stump."
You don't get commentators like Murray Walker in any sport anymore - it's all so sanitised nowadays.
RIP - Absolute legend !

RIP Murray a true giant of motor sport.
I remember him commentating on scrabbling when Grandstand started.
Brilliant autobiography, became a professional commentator very late in life, working during the week in marketing (PAL - prolongs extra life) and commentating for the BBC was his week end passion.
Everyone has a Murray quote, my favourite is "There are those that can do it, and those who can only talk about it. I just talk about it". A very modest man as always putting the sport above all else, not like many living in reflected glory.

He was adored in all of F1. When he was ill when Silverstone came around one year. I Think around 3-4 years ago now there were chants from the stand I was in of "There's only one Murray Walker." Could not be any more true.
Another year I managed to somehow get behind where the drivers parked after the Race had finished with around 20 other people or waiting. He spent time talking to fans seemed like a lovely guy. Slightly unrelated but Michael Schumacher made sure he went to sign every single persons items they asked him to, must have spent about 20 minutes, huge respect for him after that.

Chequered Flag waved one last time to a motorsport icon. Murray on Cleland sticking his middle finger up at Soper: "I'm going for third says John Cleland!" An absolute legend. He was a commentary genius and had a brilliant way with words and his audience even in his advertising career. One of the slogans he came up with was "Opal Fruits, made to make your mouth water." I wish I'd met Murray. I loved him almost like someone I know. What a brilliant person he was, and what other commentators (that didn't come from a sporting background) were as well-loved as the biggest superstars of the sport?
