Comfortably, right up there as one of our very worst signings in our history is Mr Berahino, and the one where, when he signed, I knew Hughes had finally lost the plot.

If you look back there was a multi page thread on him just before we eventually signed him.
Quite a few on here thought he would be a good signing. 🥶⚓️

I was 50/50 but after his interview immediately following his signing sounded like his head was firmly back on and was pretty excited about his prospects. Maybe the margins are just that tight that the loss of development he had from fucking about caught up with him and he could never recover - he seemed to give it a go to start with but chucked the towel in pretty quickly when he couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo anymore.

Nah
In his head it'll still be 100% someone else's fault that he was late for some tedious and tenuous reason, but he only has 280 characters on twitter.

It's easy to see why the club thought they could get something out of him. He was a bit of a wild child, similar to the wild child we took on with Arnautovic. The difference here was he was a more expensive player with deeper rooted issues than we probably even knew about, and Arnautovic was far more a better player and whilst he was a bad boy in the sterile, monotone, ultra professional backdrop of German football, over here he was a mere cheeky chappy in our more colourful game.
I thought a fresh change here would do him the world of good, but not long into his debut it was clear he was nowhere near - mentally and physically.
In the end, he came across as a massive, excuse making tool.

In my opinion, and I said it at the time, it was obvious this waster was a lost cause.

I agree that he was one of the worst signings in the club's history, along with Wimmer and Imbula. Together with an alarming dip in form in Hughes's last season, they rightly cost him his job. These signings were a perfect illustration of the unpredictability of football and the transfer market. In making the the signings, the club were backing the manager who had given us some great football. But every signing is a gamble and all three went disastrously wrong, helping to destroy dressing room unity and form - and we've been paying the price ever since.

At the risk of have by the piss taken out of me for looking like a tool, when we signed him I genuinely believed he was the missing piece to our jigsaw. A dynamite young striker who was going to be the new Fuller/Stein.
My default position ever since has been that I don’t know anything about football.

I agree that owners should back their manager, but there's backing your manager and downright neglect of duty. The signings of the three players you mention were definitely in the latter category, and these three signings alone are the main symbols of our utter incompetence from board level down in a period of our history where we should have been flourishing. You can pick the bones out of all three of these transfers and without the benefit of hindsight too. There were massive red flags against all three before we decided to bring them into the club, and it didn't take much, if any, digging to see this.

When he joined I was hoping for another "Battersea dog's home" signing, sadly he turned out to be a rabid dog that needed putting down

I mean he was a dynamite young striker to be fair. It was too much of a risk for the money but it wasn't a ridiculous notion at the time that it could have gone the other way. Mind you it was Pulis selling him wasn't it, what the hell we were doing trusting him in such a huge deal I don't know

Man who ' forgot ' to turn up for an FA drugs test , interviews man who turned up for an FA drugs test and failed it .
Presumably he asked him , why he turned up , when better to ' forget ' . Though that bit seems to have been edited out .
When Rio says he was always punctual and on time in football , he must mean , when he didn't forget to turn up , otherwise his comment makes no sense

Only in Tony scholes land , does it make sense , to sign a player , banned from playing for failing an FA drugs test , with no current form ( due to banned from playing ) , who hasn't scored for as long as anyone can remember ...for 12 million quid , plus 50 k a week wages for 5 years .
His signing bears no comparison to that of Fuller and Stein , who didn't spend their career , failing drugs tests and being banned from playing

Due diligence carried out on all signings by Tony Teflon Scholes, how the fcuk is this charlatan still in the job £50m outlay on three transfer fees alone with zero return total and utter incompetence from the board.
