I was having this discussion with a friend, and all the usual suspects were mentioned with us finally agreeing on Sir Alex and almost agreeing on the other name. The other person was someone I'd all but forgotten and I'm interested in seeing how many on here will mention him.
So who are your top 2 managers of all time?

Are we talking anywhere, ever or just in English football?

Remember reading something in 4-4-2 and behind Fergie was a Dutch fella who went Ajax to Barcalona and was a big inspiration with Cruyff - can't remember his name but remember he was mates with Boskamp Dynamo Kiev manager who looked like a Russian president was quite high up too - all their players had to take an IQ test and if they failed were out becuase he beleived if you had to tell a player how to do something more than three times they'd never do it.

No idea but I'll mention a few in my lifetime who are contenders.
Fergie - just for the sheer relentless of his success and ability to create 2/3 really good teams.
Guardiola - innovative and shaped football to what it is today really (press, press, press).
Cruyff - without Cruyff there's no Guardiola. Maybe a bullshit reason to include him? I'm not sure. But again innovative and shaped we see football as today.
Ancelotti? Scolari? The hipsters would say Bielsa.....

If we're talking innovation it's people like Lobanovskyi, Sacchi, etc who are also fathers of the modern day pressing game. You've also got people like Herbert Chapman, Bela Guttmann, Gustav Sebes.
The dynasties built by Ferguson/Shankly/Stein put them in the conversation. Clough's achievements are incredible.
Michels and Herrera in terms of both success and innovation stand out as possibly the greatest.

If you're talking about the English League; I would put Bob Paisley level with Feguson, if you consider what he won in 9 years as manager of Liverpool, compared to the 27 years Feguson was at Man Utd; closely followed by Herbert Chapman.

I just want to know who his number 2 is... If it’s British only then I think they’ve all been mentioned with your nominee of Chapman possibly being ahead of Paisley. Only other Englishman missing for me would be Bobby Robson - if only we’d beaten the Germans in 1990.

Top 2 British in the modern era. Fergie 2x European Cups, 13 titles Paisley 3 European Cups 20 trophies
Then Jock Stein First ever UK European Cup, 9 titles Clough 2x European Cups, promotion to Champions of Europe will never be repeated Shankly, 3 titles uefa cup
Special mentions Alf Ramsey, Bobby Robson, Matt Busby
Probably Herbert Champman, Bill Nicholson and Tom Watson looking further back.

Vic Buckingham possibly a wild card shout, not in terms of trophies but influence. He influenced the managers who influenced Guardiola.

Herbert Chapman, triple title winner with both Huddersfield and Arsenal, Clough for his Forest and Derby exploits. Honourable mentions for Fergie and Paisley I agree about Herbert Chapman but he didn't actually win three in a row with either Huddersfield or Arsenal. He was at Huddersfield for their first two League titles but left for Arsenal, the team he had built went on to win the third title. At Arsenal he was manager for the for the first two titles of their three in a row but died half way through the second campaign, as at Huddersfield the team he created went on to win the third title. As much as it pains me the other has to be Fergusson.

Just looking at British managers (I don't know enough about non- British) I'd suggest the likeliest candidates are:-
Fergie Bob Paisley Jock Stein Cloughie Matt Busby
Cloughie takes some beating. To win the league once is good but to do it twice with different clubs is going some and suggests he didn't just get lucky first time round, he's one of only 4 managers to do this. Also, in both cases, the starting point was with provincial clubs languishing in the second tier. Not only that he won two European Cups with Forest. Fergie, Stein, Paisley and Busby had the advantage of starting from a much stronger basis due to the size of the clubs they managed. It should also be remembered the part that Peter Taylor played in Cloughie's success.
