Series 4 episode 3. Available on sky on demand.
I like this anyway but it was nice to see something about Stoke that actually makes you proud. Portillo is a cracking presenter too.

Its a great program. Imagine what it must have been like pre-Beeching to get to virtually anywhere in the country by train.

Fucking pointless to be honest. The best thing was the platform tickets. I hopped on trains to a few nearby places as a kid after purchasing a platform ticket.

I hadn't been on a train for about 30 years in the UK, since I was at school in fact and recently went to pick someone up at Crewe I asked the lady at the tickets , where do I get a platform ticket. She looked at me like I'd just escaped from somewhere. I didn't know 😁 There used to be a machine where they were 2p by the barriers. Etruria was a great station for jumping off. Was a fella who was older than Young Mr Grace on the platform and he just couldn't be arsed. You could flash a pic of your Mum and he'd wave you by

We could have had an amazing railway infrastructure today, including old mineral and coal lines, if we had hindsight. Stoke vould have had a light railway throughout the city to all corners if we had kept the loop line and associated branches. Quite sad its all gone now.
