Inhabitants of UK cities were asked which they thought was the UK’s second city.
People from Birmingham said Birmingham.
People from Liverpool said Liverpool.
People from Manchester said Manchester.
People from Stoke said London.

It gets even funnier when you consider that London is not really a City as such but a loose collection or conglomeration of Boroughs, apart from the small areas of the City of London and the City of Westminster.
Now if you'd said which part of the UK is the cesspool of the country then we could allow Liverpool or Manchester.

Always was and always will be Birmingham, why is it even being questioned?

In the 19th century Glasgow was regarded as the Second City of the Empire! No idea what you'd call it now, (apart from anything you want to).

Being a bit old fashioned Norwich definitely gets my vote (watching tv these days I feel so out of touch that I might as well go full on medieval)
In reality I think Manchester is much more deserving of the title than Brum.

I don,t know if size counts or not but for me Manchester has to be the second city after London. Lot more going on there than Birmingham.

My vote goes to Croydon, when I lived there the council spent vast sums of rate payers' money repeatedly trying to get city status, just for the ego trip of calling themselves "City Councilors". It's just a part of South London ffs

A lot of people in Birmingham think that Manchester is the second city.
Just shows how having a Prem football team affects people's perception of a place. Certainly true when we were up there.

Ive lived in at least three cities for brief periods, including Paris and Berlin, but to me, Wells, Somerset, is by far the best. As the estate agents like to promote it: "City living in the Country!"

Manchester's mint. I don't know why but I can never quite take to Liverpool, although Scousers do seem friendly.

My vote goes to Manchester; two quite good football teams, test cricket ground, Bridgewater Hall for concerts, good tram network connecting the suburbs to the heart of the city, International airport, good dining options across the spectrum of affordability for starters. I have lived in south Manchester for over 50 years now and have benefitted from first class treatment at M.R.I. including a kidney transplant 3 years ago.
