Jimmy Carr has got away with saying this for years oh hes funny though
And it's his job to make jokes. He literally gets paid for it!
Pretty sure there aren't any footy managers out there who are told they have to make very bad taste jokes in interviews whilst representing their employer...correct me if i'm wrong.

Astounding he thought he could say this, indefensible. Trivialising rape of all things. He wasn’t doing that though was he. He was literally referencing the most heinous crime he could think of to make a point - that’s the opposite of trivialising something. Poor taste and you can’t do it, for sure, but he wasn’t “trivialising rape”.
By using it as an analogy for a fucking football incident, that in itself is trivialisiing it!!
Jesus!

With Odisha, who play in the Indian Premier League. He was the manager, until his post match interview. If you're wondering what for, it's for a post match analogy I've never seen before, and I don't think I'll ever see it again. What on earth was going through his head to say something like this? "Baxter, a British former player and well-travelled coach whose previous job was with South Africa’s national team, made his remarks after Monday’s defeat by Jamshedpur. " “You need decisions to go your way and they didn’t,” the 67-year-old said in an interview on Indian’s Star Sports television. “I don’t know when we’re going to get a penalty. I think one of my players would have to rape someone or get raped himself if he was going to get a penalty.” Absolutely crazy. Twitter has a bit of a split going on between should he have been sacked or heavily fined and disciplined. It’s obviously a very minute point but surely his player raping someone would result in a free kick the other way? Or go to var haha

He’s using it in a “trivial” context, but as an example of something that is an incredibly serious crime. You can say it’s a bit inappropriate (I agree), but again he’s not “trivialising rape”, he’s doing the opposite.

I don't condone what he has said yet I have said far worse on here - will I be banned soon? Freedom of speech is like the Queen: it's incredibly powerful as long as you don't use that power
When you type on here, you're not representing a company are you?
A football manager is. It's sod all to do with freedom of speech. The vast majority of companies in this country would discipline you for saying that if they found out
Yes very good point. As a manager he does have some responsibility in that department. It's probably not the best analogy either to make in India in the current climate

I know somebody who was fired for rather delightfully wishing rape on somebody who he disagreed with on social media. He wasn’t even using a work account when he posted, it was his personal Facebook account. His outburst was brought to his employers attention, he was fired immediately.

Jimmy Carr has got away with saying this for years oh hes funny though It's a completely different context though, isn't it? If you go to see Jimmy Carr live, you probably know what to expect, and there are 18+ warnings. I have no sympathy for Baxter here, and I don't think rape jokes are funny either. James Gunn comes across as a scumbag for me after reading an interview (assuming he wasn't misquoted) where he was proud about getting three rape jokes into the same film. The casualness of rape jokes is sick - they even appear in children's TV and film (like the one about being in jail and not bending over to pick up the soap in the shower).

That's a reasonable point. Do you think the outcome would have been the same if he had used the word 'murder' instead of 'rape'? Since murder is worse than rape I assume the authorities would have sacked him even faster. But, although the act of murder is worse than the act of rape perhaps the spoken word 'rape' is worse than the spoken word 'murder' when used in this context? My opinion is that he would have got away with 'murder'. I appreciate I'm bringing the mood down here but a family friend was violently raped in her early 20's and it absolutely traumatised her for the rest of her life, she eventually committed suicide several years later. For her, she would have preferred to have been killed there and then, she couldn't cope with the shame of what happened, and the fact that the person in question was never brought to justice. I think the fact that he said it in India as well where this is issue is high on the agenda (it was recently voted the unsafest place outside of Syria and Afghanistan to be a woman mainly because of the threat of rape) just adds to the insensitivity....... Thank you for sharing that. It gave the conversation some much needed perspective.
