He is the fan who won a competition to be mascot in the cup final , and to play for Stoke when he turned 18 Coca Cola ran the competition if I remember rightly.

The last time a Goodwin made his debut for Stoke he scored twice...went pretty much downhill after that for Dave Goodwin I'm afraid. Hope this lad starts a bit slower, but goes on for many, many successful seasons as a Stokie

He’ll be a tough cookie if he’s been brought up on the mean streets of Tarporley !! Posh place is Tarporley - Paul Burrell, the late Diana Princess of Wales' butler came from there. So did my boss at my first ever job for the Min of Ag Fish and Food at Crewe.

For me this is the way forward for us, there has to be some gems in the lower leagues which can be polished. Yes they may not become first team player's, but they are low risk and have to be better than forking out millions..if he shows instant promise, get him around the first team, he can learn loads from the senior pro's, Fletcher would be fantastic to learn from at the time of his development.. We’ve been doing it for years, it’s nothing new.

What a great insight to the player, this is how the football pyramid should work and I hope the kids dream is fulfilled to the benefit of not just Stoke but Chester also.

This is why I love football, that's a brilliant watch 👍 Fuck the multi millionaire mercenaries who bleed clubs to death, it’s a story like this that make you carry on supporting your team, A kid who was a mascot for his team at the club and it’s fans proudest moment. He lives and breathes football, dreams of playing for his club and then signs for them. It’s a boys own story and I hope it has the ending that it deserves.

Those Chester blokes are the lifeblood of the game too on/off furlough nowhere to train. They wish him well and have done amazing things. I think he was at Sandbach a while. I really hope his dream comes true and listening to that it won't be for lack of trying. Biggest feelgood signing of the window for me. Im reminiscing of watching the reserves on a cold foggy Wednesday night in the Boothen paddock by the tunnel, with a Bovril. You know what they always say about 'hungry fighters' this restores my faith in the game. Well at least for an hour or two until I remember the overpaid wankers sucking the life out of it.

Please, please, please let him be a success.
What a potential story.
PS he looks a bit like Shawcross so that’s another good omen!

I’ve seen him play then 😂 He will be a tidy footballer to fit in at Sandbach. They always to try to pass it around nicely. I’d be lying if I can say I can remember seeing him play but he played in at least one of the games I went.

If you could think of someone who will wear the red & white shirt with some gusto and some pride, then this lad sounds like he could be one. Over to you Michael....first step is to get him on the bench chomping at the bit. Second step then put him on instead of The Wardrobe. Stoke fan, Stoke player....unleash! I love this “The Wardrobe.” It’s perfect. If everyone on here said The Wardrobe from here on in and the word Vokes was never used again, it might finally get the message across to the manager. You never know, it might even get across to The Wardrobe himself.

I've got a weird feeling he will feature sooner rather than later. Reckon he will work hard to make this opportunity count

I can't remember him from watching him tbh but I don't go regularly and the game I watched him in, Sandbach lost 2-1 and were really bad. I do remember them having a young striker on loan from Chester though and people saying he had something about him and were disappointed he was recalled.

I'm biased of course, but its sounds a familiar story to one of my favourite players. To go from supporting in the Boothen,to playing in front of it.Its Roy of the rovers stuff Good luck Will and welcome (back) to Stoke.

You never know, it might even get across to The Wardrobe himself. Reminds me of a big guy from American Football a couple of decades ago. William Perry, a defensive lineman for the Chicago Bears, who had the memorable nickname "Refrigerator", as I think he once eat and emptied the contents of a fridge at one sitting. Mind you he was some sportsman and was actually quite good. Edit: Maybe we could establish a tradition of naming footballers by comparison to Household furniture. (Similarly to the psychoanalytical question, "if you were an animal what would you be".) Ince would have been an occasional table!

Dave Goodwin scored 3 goals in 26 appearances for Stoke between 1973 and 1977. He came from Nantwich.

When I was in the Min of Ag Fish and Food, I quite envied my boss living there - it is a pretty place. His name was Bob Salt and I expect he will have gone to meet his maker some time ago as he would be over 100 by now.

We did have a player who did complete the dream, and I know he has friends and colleagues on here, Shaun Wade ! I think he worked in the pottery industry and I remember that he was a prolific striker, the fans rallied to give him a try out and I think Lou played as a substitute but unfortunately he suffered a serious injury that would prove impossible for a professional career but I know he continued in the local leagues. Newcastle Town ?

I just remember chatting to a work colleague who is an Eccelshall fan and doing the best bit of control I've ever done with a football ever when a ball was kicked out
