The Jocks sing about flowers in Scotland the Taffys sing their own stuff too but we have to sing the British anthem!
Its about time our country had an English anthem to stir the passions before sporting events etc
Heard this on talksport yesterday, I never realised how good it was til I listened to the wods, I love it!

I'd go with 'Smack My Bitch Up' by the Prodigy.

Could be wrong but don't we use 'Land of Hope and Glory' as an English anthem. I'm sure that is what is played when English athletes are receving their medals at the commonwelth games. Perhaps the England football team should use it as well. Jerusalem is a bit too religious for my liking.

I agree that we need an English national anthem, but surely it comes down to one of either Jerusalem or I vow to thee, my countryPersonally I prefer I vow to thee as a song, but It'd have to be Jerusalem as an English anthem

Much as I love William Blake, Jerusalem is a load of bobbins about Jesus going to Cornwall on holiday. Not really 21st century anthem material.
Land of Hope and Glory is a British Empire music hall song, so that's out as well.
It can only be Swords of a Thousand Men by Tenpole Tudor.

I know it's not strictly an all English tune, but "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince is smashing isn't it?
We could have a dance and that while they played it.

Totally agree, It always winds me up when we use the British anthem. I'm a big fan of Jerusalem but thats because it has been adopted by the England cricket fans and I sung it many a time on tour in NZ earlier this year. For me it should be Land of Hope & Glory

Whats wrong with Jerusalem being a "religous" song? Aren't English people allowed to have a religion? I'm Proud to be English and think Jerusalem is a marvellous song "Land of Hope and Glory" a "music-hall-act"?? What kind of bollox is that? People fought and died for this country Show some respect

Is that Lennin or Trotsky?
How can you leave Marx and Engels out?
Or McCartney and Ringo Star?

Better stop dreaming of the quiet life - Cos its the one well never know And quit running for that runaway bus - Cos those rosey days are few And - stop apologising for the things youve never done, Cos time is short and life is cruel - But its up to us to change This town called malice. Rows and rows of disused milk floats Stand dying in the dairy yard And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk Bottles to their hearts Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry Its enough to make you stop believing when tears come Fast and furious In a town called malice.
Struggle after struggle - year after year The atmospheres a fine blend of ice - Im almost stone cold dead In a town called malice.
A whole streets belief in sundays roast beef Gets dashed against the co-op To either cut down on beer or the kids new gear Its a big decision in a town called malice.
The ghost of a steam train - echoes down my track Its at the moment bound for nowhere - Just going round and round Playground kids and creaking swings - Lost laughter in the breeze I could go on for hours and I probably will - But Id sooner put some joy back In this town called malice.

Whether you like it or not, Land of Hope and Glory is a British Empire music hall song and therefore not specific to England. Religion? Keeps the old dears sane when hubby pops his clogs but it has no place in a national anthem, especially when, like Jerusalem, it's basically the eighteenth-century equivalent of a song by David Icke about lizards in turquoise tracksuits.

Elgar's arrangement of Jerusalem is pretty cool though.

Not half as cool as Mark Stewart's, but delusional religiosity and righteous dub still don't make a national anthem.
