They're not the only ones apparently, according to my mate who is an Arsenal fan, Spurs have also taken it.
Despicable if you ask me. There is enough money in football without using ours. The only money that should go into a club from the taxpayer is what they decide to put in themselves.

Unto him that hath shall be given, even in great abundance. From him that have not shall be taken away even that which he hath. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Something like that anyway). Applies in all walks of life - the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Yet they could afford to give Aubameyang a new £250k a week contract a couple of months ago. Pisstake.

Wonder how that works with FFP Isn't applicable in the Prem I don't think? Edit: Plus, they are told it is specifically NOT to be used for transfers...

The mind boggles with stories like this, no wonder people are getting turned off by premier league football.

It's a loan and will have repayment terms. But for the fact that this is a Premier League team that we dislike would we give a shit?
All football clubs have been impacted, I just hope the lower league teams are able to access this type of Govt support.

It's not the fact that it's The Arse specifically for me, it's the fact that it's a rich club that has recently been throwing money around like confetti on new player contracts. The taxpayer should not be supporting that. The only way on earth this could possibly be legitimised is if it is offered to all league clubs as per the Macclesfield example quoted above.

Yep has to be repaid by May so probably no good for the efl, Tottenham have had one since last year. No love for arsenal but every fanless home game probably costing them £5m+ a home game, there is not enough money in football to cover that, players still have to be paid....

Didnt they also sack their mascot claiming they had no money then went and spend 40odd million on a midfielder

Hang on. Is it even taxpayer's money? It's more likely to be a loan guaranteed by the governmwnt should they fail to repay, which they won't.

That's how wealth transfer works mate - those that don't need it take it from those that do.

It was never going to be allocated to those that need it. It was lent to a company that would pay it back and I don't blame Arsenal for getting a loan with low interest.

Surely smaller more realistic loans with low interest re-payments could have been distributed to lower league clubs that are in trouble?

That would be better for football but financially riskier to the government. I'm not defending the government. The money was made available because there's profit in it for the bank.

I know mate, sorry, I wasn't intentionally directing it at you. I just don't understand how they can't make these kinds of loans available to lower leagues. If it's a loan, there will be interest, so regardless of the amount, no matter how small, they will make profit. I'm sure a suitable loan system can be worked out which is fair for all leagues, not just the Prem. To me there is no excuse, and clubs like Arsenal with Billionaire owners should be ashamed for taking them. If we were in the Prem and Coates took one I'd be embarrassed. I get that I am pissing in the wind, just ranting.
