He has just finished out his contract at Shamrock Rovers - who MO'N managed earlier in his career - and is weighing up his options. I have watched him regularly for Rovers over the past two years, and he is the best player in the League of Ireland by miles. Rovers have made him a great offer to re-sign (as they will find it impossible to replace him), but in relative terms to what Stoke could offer, it's small beer. He's the creative midfielder that we need, playing just in front of Cousins/Mikel. Very composed and unflustered, he scores his fair share also. I would love him at the club. Is he more of a Powell competition than a Clucas?

I reckon that the atmosphere of professionalism and camaraderie that MO'N has engendered in the club would suit Byrne down to the ground. It wouldn't do any harm either to have fellow Irish International, McClean, and (future International) Collins, to help him settle in. I think one of the reasons why the Irish boys always seemed to do well at the club is that there was always a few of them looking out for one another. How is Collins not already in their side? Who have they got who is better?

Not sure about this one 24 years old and not made it past Shamrock Rovers In MOM we trust but for me this would be totally underwhelming Wonder if Leicester fans thought the same when they signed Vardy ?

No-one. It's seems comical that Shane Duffy is in the side when Collins isn't. That will change pretty quickly, though, and the Irish defence for years to come will be built around Caoimhin Kelleher, Darragh O'Shea and Collins. I am telling anyone over here who will listen to me that Collins will win 100 caps. Interestingly, my wife was a teacher in Confey College, Leixlip, when Collins was in first year, but she doesn't remember him.

I can't See any reports that we are after this lad, who certainly looks a good player, looks like competition for Powell.
But it seems to be between Forest and Preston

Great signing if we got him,
I think he’s pretty much certain to be a big hit wherever he ends up. He’ll be playing in the Premier League within two years.

Byrne has been linked to us in the Irish press. Given our FFP circumstances, and the certainty that M O'N is looking at players who are "affordable", you can be sure that the manager knows all about Byrne who, I expect, will be an Ireland regular as soon as joins a club in a more competitive league. I really hope it's us. Please, Santa....

He looks as if he has that bit of an X factor, something we may need in tight matches, like Derby and QPR, especially in Campbell's absence..

As a Rovers fan I would be devastated to lose Jack as he is the best I've seen here,I would love him to come to Stoke as I think he would do a serious job for us. For those asking he was a very promising teenager at Man City but just got frustrated with not getting a chance?bounced around a few clubs but never quite made it and started to get a rep of being a duck.As a last resort he decided to come home to his Mammy and signed for Rovers. The manager love bombed him and they haven't looked back since. It could be the first player to move from Rovers to Stoke in my 50 years following both although Max Murphy a promising young lad did move the other way last year.

Always reminded me of something from Father Ted.

The Wonderful Barn is on the other side of Leixlip to Confey. By the way, the video footage of Byrne doesn't truly represent what his game is mainly about, which is passing and link play. But he does score a lot, too, to be fair.

Not saying will happen but one of the better football papers for me although did a bit of a daft article onSteven Ireland once without doing their research.

Never heard of the lad and let’s face it shamrock are on a par with the dog and duck. However, sometimes players need that break in there careers to push on. He could turn out to be a very good signing. Here’s hoping anyway

Here’s hoping anyway He was superb against a strong AC Milan side in the Europa League recently, I’m sure the standard’s ever so slightly better than the Dog and Duck and I’m almost certain he will take to the Championship comfortably...

Might our (supposed) interest in Jack Byrne suggest that TOB hasn't developed to the extent that MON had hoped?

In old language, Byrne is a schemer; looks for the ball all the time; seems to find space easily; doesn't like to pass it sideways or backwards; great range of passing; takes corners, frees and penalties; good shot on him; very calm on the ball; has a bit of a mean streak; appears equally comfortable playing in front of the central defenders or as a number ten.
When he left Man. City as a twenty-year-old (?), it had nothing to do with ability; he needed to "grow up" a bit, which he has now done, and the timing is right to have another go in England. Personally, I feel that chances like this don't come around very often where we can get an "oven-ready" player who would cost very little. Michael O'Neill's knowledge of the domestic game in Ireland must give us a little advantage.

Taking it off the back four then, (a la a certain Mr Hudson)? or providing bullets for the front two (like a certain S. Ireland)?

Rumours he was a bit of a Mark Kennedy at Man City, a player who flushed it all away but a few did there at the time

He looks to perfect to be true, has variety in his passing range a hell of a shot on him and nearly came all the way through the ranks at city, BUT ? After three years away from City and establishing himself as one the best players in Ireland , why has nobody come in for him before now, not a premier league club or anyone from the EFL. It can’t be that clubs have been queuing up to wait for his contract to run down because even as a long shot he’d have come cheap, professional football is a small world and everyone is looking for a rough diamond so why not Byrne ? It’s got to be something with his personality/ professionalism or dedication.

I suppose we'll have to trust MON and his team on this one as I doubt there's many people know anything about him apart from what they see on social media or read in the press. Gouranga.

Follow the LOI Albert and like the Shamrock fan says he stands out massively. Ok not the greatest league but progression in Europe lately shows the strides it's made and would put Kenny's Dundalk team previously up against what Scotland has to offer of late. Would be a gamble as with any league where players unproven at our level , Towell at Dundalk scored for fun but a League One player at a push in the end , he did score against us though
