I recall Mike Dean’s extravagant “Karate Chop” hand signal for a penalty in one match at the Brit.
Think it was against Spurs.
We often seemed to have a player sent off in home games against them…

Who remembers Clive, The Book, Thomas ? Was it 70/80s ? He was probably the first of his type. At 1978 World Cup, in a game between Brazil and Sweden, he infamously blew the final whistle for full time when the ball was in the air from a corner kick, Zico scored moments later, which would have given Brazil a 2-1 win. Bizarre one. Ronnie Hellstrom the Swedish keeper to be fair was already celebrating when Zico scored but he was a liability of a ref. Telford Mills another of his time.

We often seemed to have a player sent off in home games against them… He also did an overly exaggerated “no, no, no” finger wag at the Boothen from the half way line one game after he got the obligatory “if he played for Stoke, you’d send him off” chant. Comical character who seems to thrive on notoriety.

He'll be missed as much as Rob "the cunt' Styles in these parts. Was Mike Dean the ref who indicated 4 minutes of injury time in the first play-off leg against Gillingham, but played 6 and they scored a worldie in the 5th minute?

Yep that’s him and he reffed the famous night at Cardiff with Oulare’s famous backside assist

Am sure he thought you pointed the same way as in rugby for decisions I just found an article on him after he disallowed 2 Newcastle goals at Brighton . When we sat in the dressing room after the match I remember chatting to one of my linesmen, John Morley, when the police officer turns up. ‘You’d better hang on here a while, Trelford, there are 2,000 Geordies outside and they all want your autograph’.”

“I see Mike Dean” was one of the cut scenes from Sixth Sense. This affliction, which includes shocking nightmares, has often been described as the Football equivalent of The Omen with a hint of Apocalypse Now. The only known treatment is to seek the guidance of a natural healer known as Old Betsy Thrumfleet to fill your Wellies with herbal jelly. . .

And I hope he doesn't get the "bright" idea of being a "pundit." I’d actually like to hear him talk. My view on him so far is based upon perception rather than reality. Although of course, perception IS reality! BM

I saw him at a Half Man Half Biscuit gig in Sheffield once.
He was carrying four pints and had another clamped between his teeth.

In light of recent events, the VAR crew has now been designated a terrorist organization.

And I hope he doesn't get the "bright" idea of being a "pundit." Dont knock it...over here in NL they have the refs give interviews after the game, the same as the players, as to why they made the decision they did and explaining the laws behind the decision. It makes for fascinating watching, only for the fact that everything on the pitch is 'the heat of the moment' for the players but the ref has to detach himself from that and when youve got a bunch of scrotes screaming inyour face it can be quite daunting. Then youve got the pundits, sometimes eating humble pie and backtracking. Great to listen to and good viewing.... Mike Deans still a knob though !

The wonderful Roger Kirkpatrick. He was enjoyed by the crowd at Stoke in the late 60's and early 70's. I recall the Boothen end once chanting his name in a good way. He was often more entertaining than the match.
