We started the season slowly and I for one criticised the lack of excitement and attacking intent.
Yesterday made up for it 😂

Pulis ball Souttar Chester Batth Fox Clucas Mikel Cousins Gregory Vokes Fletcher We do just lump it in all fairness. The difference between Pulis’ side played from winning the scraps off the flick on, MON’s side play from winning the ball high up when we’ve lost it. Why do you just deal in absolutes Bayern? There’s no grey with you is there? We don’t just lump it. We mix it. We do a bit of most things in attack. Which makes us hard to play against as our results suggest. We’re very like Macari style Stoke and MON is very like Lou IMO.

Huddersfield has 69% possession. That does not suggest we mixed it up. Like Reading, the goals came from the high press and the mistakes that creates. We created a lot more yesterday but I think Huddersfield were a lot worse at the back. I’m too young to remember Macari properly so can’t comment.

What's happened to Cousins? We know he's limited and can't oass the ball but he always seemed the most reliable CDM we had on the books. But the last two outings, he's looked awful.

Can do a bit of everything? Also suggests a manager who is versatile and can adapt to different opposition.

I don’t think we have though. We try to win it high up pitch and play from there in most of those games. It’s not been pretty. I think we’ve only played well in one of those games listed which was Brentford but it’s worked.

Managers are personalities and their personalities run through their teams and their performances. The idea that playing some direct football and sometimes making substitutions to protect a lead turns it into Pulisball is palpable nonsense. Pulis ball was extremrly simple but it had more features than that. Not trusting youth and a religious devotion to formation and favourite players regardless of suitability for the situation were far more striking features. It was football by numbers. I loved the Pulis era. I love it now. Anyone who thinks the football feels the same knows bugger all about football imo.

I think overall we’re boring under MON despite the goals. But I really hate long ball football and don’t overly want to watch it. I want our front players given more of the ball and to be allowed to play. But it works and it’s working well. I cannot argue with that. But do I generally find it boring? Yes. (Yesterday wasn’t boring btw, far from it)

But if you’re going to use them then you can’t just pick and choose ones that suit you. Actually, on second thoughts, you clearly can.

But I find not being able to predict the exact formation, team and positions, subs and time used pre match a far more interesting aspect of this era. I used to feed off a completely different thing in that era.

Can l just mention the high press. I just love the harassment of defenders into needlessly giving away possession or a throw-in in dangerous areas. Douff and SJ were masters at it. Means we normally have to change the horses after 75 minutes but with five subs allowed that's hardly a problem.

You are too young to remember the Macara era properly? Jeezus wept, Bayern, metaphorically speaking, Stokiewise, you haven't stopped shitting yellow yet! Anyway, the manager gets a 9 from me. His side took three points in a seven goal thriller and the reason we won was because of his tactical nous in the final 20 minutes. I honestly thought we were not going to win that game and could have lost it. Well done Boss. OS.

Remember Stein’s name but the first Stoke player I properly loved was whoever came first out of Sharon and Peschisolido. But even then for the 95/96 season I was no older than 9 so have no real recollection of what it was actually like tbh.

I think you are talking bollocks. Before Cousins came on we were totally under the cosh and had lost any kind of grip on the game. A defeat looked more likely than a win. After cousins came on we tightened up, gave them absolutely nothing and saw the game out easily. All his subs worked a treat. He was brave, left himself open to criticism but made the changes that won us the game. Excellent management. Brave? He totally shat himself with the Cousins sub and just invited more pressure. Playing long ball football isn’t brave either, quite the opposite. No he didn't. He saw we we more likely to lose than even draw, shored things up and we cruised the last 15 minutes. Brilliant management and he was the biggest influence on the game getting us the 3 points in the process

Bring the strikers on relieved the pressure but it was about 10/15 minutes too late.

he's got to stop using cousins to try to shore things up last 20 mins when were winning- it gives impetus to opponents with his lack of speed, agility and passing range- on a brighter note he is out of contract at the end of the season

Still plenty to do regarding possession and improving the successful pass rate.
Good win, though. Nice to see us scoring goals again.

Ok. On the basis of the game exclusively.... 1. He’s had to set up with a third choice keeper who has had virtually no time to work on set up and familiarising himself with the system. Despite this we get the three points. 2. He’s made a number of substitutions in the match and actively responded when things have looked like getting away from us. Fair to argue he may have been a little slow to get the cavalry on in the form of Vokes and Gregory. But again, we get the three points. 3. You’ve been quick to praise the front three. Rightly so. But who selected them? And who gave them the instruction to operate the high press and do it so intelligently? See goal 3 for evidence. Brilliant from Fletcher and Campbell but does the manager not have a big part to play here. 10 or 9 for me. I’d understand an 8. At a push a 7. But a 6/10? Bollocks. We didn’t play well and they’re instructed to play long ball football when we should be trying to keep the ball and play football. The need to change formation was imo due to the way we had been set up to play. Wasting your time , people get blinded by the result and think 4-3 is great , they don’t see the long ball shite and even worse defending a lead

If udders had equalised in the last minute yesterday - ie the exact same performance but they poked in a goal at the end - the scores in this thread would be 4s and 5s and no one would be batting an eyelid about it
