Only switched on once Sorensen was subbed for MK Dons.
He looked very neat and tidy and was keeping the ball well. Was then subbed. 😂
So I’m back to MK Dons hoping for penalties.

Nice to hear Sorenson doing well, he seems shaky and unsure at times but lots of promise in there. I heard shenton in the commentary and had to google if it was olly, amazing how he seemed in our youth set up forever and then straight down to a team like Chorley, would have though there would have been another team in L1/2 who would have taken him?

Yeah Sorensen again was being neat and tidy but then got pushed into a more attacking midfield role and he became anonymous with it. But he’s not an attacking midfielder. Yeah I hope he can do well and rise through the league tbh. He’s a good little footballer but an example of how not to develop a player.

He was excellent for the u18s. When we were in the PL under Hughes Derby wanted him on loan but we kept him and he spent the rest of the season not playing in the PL or for the u23s whilst being in the first team match day squad. The opposite of Campbell tbh. People slated Jones for sending him out on loan when we did but I thought it was what he needed. He needed regular minutes. On the whole we’ve done it better since. Sorensen though is one who has been caught in that purgatory of first team squad duty but then not being allowed to play for the 23s.

Having watched a lot of Non-League football Ive often thought the lines between 'making it' and 'not making it' in elite pro football can be very fine. Ive seen some players at non-league who should really have been playing at a very high level with the right circumstances, but there can be a whole range of reasons why that doesn't happen. I think there is a lot of mental/psychological factors as well as physical as well as external stuff around coaching that contribute to the eventual path of a player. I think the coaching factor is huge though and that is luck of the draw in many respects. Player development is not an exact science, in fact it seems mostly the opposite.

Oh it definitely is but as a club I think we failed him as part of that from the age of 18. But shit happens and I think on the whole we’re learning.

Interesting to see the development of Campbell, souttar, tymon, soon bursik maybe after benefitting from playing first team football on loans.

Never underestimate luck of the draw, generally in life. Talent followed by hard work is key but luck definitely contributes in a significant way.

Great article, thanks. "Robinson, who also set up the Stoke City academy" Is that right?

Don’t really know that much about him, but you know your beans when it comes to the young lads. I guess he’s still young enough to make a good living out of the game if he’s motivated enough to do so.

A young man came on for Chorley in the last minute (Oli Putnam) - he played for me through LadsanDads from u10s onwards (is a Biddulph lad), powerful and a great eye for goal
Know after we finished at u15s he went to Newcastle Town, ended up getting a trial at Chorley and is on the fringes of the first team (is 18/19)
Messaged him last night, he was buzzing about the getting on and being part of the squad/game.

The reason nobody from div 1/2 didn’t take him is simple:- He’s not very good!

The reason nobody from div 1/2 didn’t take him is simple:- He’s not very good! I heard the same. Apparently Crewe came to watch him at stoke and said he was nowhere near the level, even of Crewe.

Unless my memory is playing tricks wasn't Olly's only PL appearance when he came on as a sub during injury time v Man City and didn't the ref blow for time just at the very instant he was having his first touch ? Did he actually touch the ball in the PL ?

Did he actually touch the ball in the PL ? That's correct. But for a good season he was pretty much always in the matchday squad. He spent a year playing no football.

I've just had my daily phone call with Nello who has rung Chorley FC to congratulate them and offered them a game against NBFC - you see that's the kind of reward which awaits if you do a giant-killing in the FA Cup Nello tells me they have accepted when the virus is over. Nello knows Ollie and his dad from his time at Stoke. I can't wait for that game !
