I have published a new book We’ll Be With You. It’s darker and harder hitting than my earlier book Glory Hunter in 2017. I am once again supporting the Macari Foundation and helping to the homelessness charity. The book is once again backed by Lou. As well as documenting our fall from a decade in the Premier League, dealing with Covid-19 and Nathan Jones, it also charts our turnaround, from that amazing day in Barnsley a year ago once MON joined our club. I hope you enjoy it even though it wasn’t easy to write about a tough period in our history. It’s available on Amazon, and the Club are supporting it also by making it available in the Club shops. With Christmas looming, I hope Oatcake subscribers can enjoy it for £10 including postage (and an inscription of your choice!) this also means a charitable donation of £5 per book. Please direct message me to order your copy. I was was amazed that there wasn’t already a book with this title, about our proud club, the oldest on the planet with a family tree unequalled by no other. I am proud to use the title of our famous anthem, the best football anthem ever. ADMIN, COULD YOU PIN THIS POST SO THAT OATCAKE SUBSCRIBERS CAN HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT LOU’SCHARITY.

Better image of back cover so you can read the blurb and Lou’s comments.

View Attachment View AttachmentJust to provide a flavour of the book, here is Chapter 1, Prologue. PROLOGUE This book is all about the experience of celebrating success to the full while also enduring inevitable, heart breaking disappointment. They are close neighbours. As a Stoke City fan for almost fifty years I am well practised in both departments. My club embraces Newton's law of gravity, “what goes up, must come down.” Stoke City became an established Premier League club in 2008 and remained for a decade, with wealthy, generous UK owners, playing in front of capacity crowds every week. They had international players from Austria, Switzerland, Spain, USA, France, Germany all the home nations as well as from the African continent and beyond; all on fully leaded Premier League contracts. For a dozen years, there had been just two managers of the club spanning the Premier League years 2008 to 2018. The long-standing Tony Pulis for seven years who guided the club to the elite division and instilled an iron backbone. He gave us a Wembley final appearance in 2011 and a European adventure. He was replaced by Mark Hughes and in almost five years at the club achieved three consecutive ninth place finishes and brought back the style of players to Stoke City we hadn't seen grace the top league in the world since the 1970's; Alan Hudson's era. Times changed and between January 2018 and November 2019, just twenty-two months, there have been five managers. A damaging relegation season in 2018 was a massive wakeup call but no one woke up and a new relegation battle was underway in the Championship in 2019/20. We had spent well over £200m on transfer fees during Premier League years and toward the end of that era made two record signings, both for £18m. These players have appeared on just handfuls of occasions and in common with some other notable big money signings they have betrayed our Club, with their appalling behaviour, disgraceful attitude and total lack of commitment. They subsequently became valueless within a year! These signings were gambles that backfired. When Stoke City signed Alan Hudson from Chelsea, their best player, in 1974 for £240,000, it was also a record signing. This wasn't a gamble in the slightest. With unrest in the squad and turbulence and volatility in the management and coaching staff, even the loyal fan base became divided. From ninth in the Premier League in March 2017 to bottom of the Championship in eighteen months was a devastating fall from grace. Could the decline be arrested in a way that neither Sunderland or Bolton had been able to achieve in recent seasons? Would the players be up for the fight? Some wouldn't. But some would, a new cohort playing literally for their lives, their reputation and their entire future in the beautiful game. Much had changed. Some things hadn't. The loyal support for the Club remains, it groans and mithers, but is always there come rain or shine. It's always been the same. We are always there, no matter what. Waiting, hoping and praying that the good times will return. We are lucky. We still have generous, loyal, proud local owners who remain serial investors in the club. The Coates family who have been in situ for fifteen years have also seen it all. We continue to rely on them as they help provide new pieces of the puzzle. All we need to do is find the solution to the riddle. In over a dozen years the owners have frozen season ticket prices, recognising the local demographics in Stoke on Trent and knowing the value and power of a full stadium. I live in Northampton where Northampton Town, The Cobblers, play nearby at Sixfields Stadium. They were promoted from League Two to League One this year and a season ticket there is comfortably more expensive than my seat in the Boothen End at Stoke City and has been throughout our Premier League years. Sometimes, even when you possess all the cards; all the jigsaw pieces to complete the picture and then exploit the opportunity to take charge and dominate, it's still not possible. Uncontrollable things happen. In March 2020, there was another threat to football, to humanity. Covid-19 swept across the world in a global pandemic never witnessed before by anyone alive on the planet. Can we, and will we prevail? We always do. We evolve, become more agile and we adapt. As we change and win the war against this silent, invisible, deadly plague, there will be a new normal. "We'll be with you, every step along the way". Our club anthem, has never been so poignant. It's time for togetherness, not division. It's time for strength and resolve, not weakness or submission. We will prevail. And we will be stronger having faced the challenge. We know and believe that United Strength is Stronger

I don't want to hijack Brian's thread ( our family's copies of "We'll be with you" have arrived but won't be opened until 'the day') but just to say that Nello and I have agreed that the authors' royalties from the new and extended paperback version of "Marvellous" will be split between Lou's homeless charity and the Keele Volunteering project - Nello's two favourite charities. Unfortunately, because it's commercially published, it won't be anything like 50% of the sale price, but better than nothing. You can get it on-line from the Club shop, Waterstones or Amazon.

Tomorrow we face Neil Warnock (Colin’s) Boro at the Bet365. It will be tough but they are beatable. In my book, read about my reference to the anagram of Neil Warnock’s name in Chapter 4. Lots of people like him. I don’t. I remember him as manager of Sheff Utd. So let’s beat them and get into the top 6 !
