Soutar played well except for their first goal, but still I missed Batth at the back. I think we look much more solid with him in the team.

I didn't miss Batth, I missed 4 at the back and some desire to want to win a game of football. Any justification of this system yet? With fans it would be getting very uncomfortable

Souttar is looking like a great prospect, even more so than Collins so far too. For the goal though, he'll be gutted he didn't just bring him down and get a yellow card...

I’d like DB at the back with Souttar and Collins. Chester is ok but doesn’t seem to influence the shape as much as Batth. DB is a leader which the 2 young lads need

In home games having a centre back who can't play the ball out is a huge backwards step. Don't clamour for that. Instead back the two young centre backs who play progressive football and can play out, as you saw for our first goal.

It is a team game, yes, but you can't have a RWB that has the attributes of Smith. He was at fault almost exclusively, if he gave a shit he would have ran and gave his all. He didn't, they scored. Diabolical for the second too, to lose your man like that...

Smith just completely switches off at times. The second goal was terrible. Felt like he was just thinking about getting in at half time at 1-1.

His back is turned when the throw is taken. Absolute schoolboy stuff. But Souttar should deal with it irrespective.

I would in away games against the better sides yes. I think when we are playing lesser teams home or away, we need to put out a 4-2-3-1 with our best players, you can't play an attacking side with Baath in there, he surrenders possession every time he plays it forwards

He could not play a square pass tonight half the time. In fact, I don't think he ever played the ball forwards. He is not quite ready for me, but we really are pinning everything on our 2 young defenders - could be in for a long season if it does not pan out. We really don't have many other options in central defence do we - considering he likes to play 3 of them too. Had high hopes MON would bring some better defenders in - a massive disappointment for me in that area

If you can't see the huge potential in Collins you just don't know football. He's 19, and there's nothing wrong with him on the ball. He's excellent on the ball.

DB for me as he’s a big unit, better organiser and more imposing than Chester. He’s got his limitations on the ball but always think we look better with him.

Unless it's an aerial bombardment Bahht is lost. He's good at getting his head on crosses but on the ground he's not good. Most of all though he panics. As for being an organiser I've not noticed it. Tonight with the high pressing Barnsley we're doing especially in the first half he would have been a liability.

Batth in the middle of a three leaves two tall, rather immobile centre backs in Souttar and Collins being dragged into full back areas where they are uncomfortable. It’s not as simple as stringing your best three “stoppers” in a line.

I'm not Chester's biggest fan but he was the best of the 3 tonight. Collins and Souttar will make mistakes because they are young and lack experience at this level. Souttar was very good for the most part but the error for the first goal was really poor. Collins has massive potential but I don't think he is ready yet for a consistent run in the team, too many poor decisions (and I don't mean the sending off). So at the moment I would stick with Souttar with Batth in a two or with Batth and Chester in a three.

He has got potential and he may one day realise it - it may, hopefully, start coming together this year. But we conceded nearly 20 goal attempts against Luton, which is an appalling stat and tonight our defence was split all over the place with simple balls over the top. He has very little competitive game time and is young - time will prove whether he is ready this season - but, for me, he is a worry in that defence at the moment

How many looked dangerous? If a team shoots on sight of course they will have more attempts but not necessarily look more like scoring. The only way for him to gain experience is to play and as yet he has looked shaky at the start of games but settled into them. He has done nothing horrendous and deserves the chance to play. Don't forget that the coaching staff think enough of him to have played him left, right and fullback this season. On Saturday, his first league start of the season he was asked to play out of position on the left to accommodate the far more experienced Batth.

I'm amazed we don't start with Baath, he knows the drill and he offers leadership and is always likely to pop up with a goal at a set piece.

Leaving Ba’ath out was mind-bogglingly ridiculous. If Collins’ red card is upheld, we’re stuck with no CBs on the bench or he’ll have to switch to a back four, which is fine with me.

Yeah I don't get Chester over Batth. Danny boy always looks louder and more engaged in marshalling the back line, which we seem to be missing.
Souttar fucked up for the first goal, he's gonna do that again while he's learning. Still my favourite defender though.

We need one of baath /chester with souttar abd collins. I pray that Ryan could get some semblance of fitness as him with souttar and collins would be the best 3. Souttar and shawcross in a 2.

The manager addressed this in his interview and pretty much said he brought Chester back in because he thought we'd have more of the ball.
1. We actually didn't have that much more of the ball because Barnsley pressed us high and wide. 2. Chester was the worst of the three centre halves on the ball and every pass went backwards or sideways.
The last point is quite pertinent.
3. He actually makes our defence far less organised and was outshone quite considerably by two young kids.
Get him gone. Liam Lindsay would make this defence more balanced than he does.
