Really don’t like how Shawcross is lumped in a 3 with Wimmer and Lindsay. Get rid of those pair and I’d probably shift BMI if there were any takers BMI's the best left-sided centre back we have though. Shawcross has had it, sadly. As much as I love the man, his body's been telling him for 2 years that it's had enough. He can see out his contract here by all means, but it's over now and he probably knows that. Cannot disagree with that but tbh using the term 'understudy' in regard to Ryan Shawcross comes across as demeaning

Just for some balance because it was stated that for a much slagged off player who played well it's the classic 'it's only Gillingham'.

We played 3-5-2 against Bristol City, Brentford, and Forest at the end of last season. I’m not sure we dominated any of those games despite getting good results. It was a much more adventurous version of what we've been playing of late, Powell was being pushed much further forward than he is now for example. Do you mean towards the end of last season when he went 3-5-2 after the Leeds debacle? If you are, then Powell barely kicked the ball against Brentford or Bristol City and didn’t even play against Forest.

Very true but we were much more proactive unless I remmeber it wrong, we didn't just sit back and take it like we did on Sunday.

Collins, Souttar and BMI should be the first choice back 3 now. Chester, Batth, Fox should be their understudies. Shawcross, Wimmer, Lindsay should be the understudies' understudies. We've probably got a few more centre-halves in the building somewhere as well. A fit Shawcross would be my choice to play between them but I'm not sure if either can play left side. If not it's a close call between BMI and Fox. A motivated BMI is better but I thought Fox did ok tonight. Not the best of opposition to judge defenders by though.

I don't see as many stoke games as most of you so alot of my opinions are based from these forums and stats. Surely batth deserves a bit more time though, he scored in 3 of the final 4 games in which Stoke achieved 10/12 points which in turn kept them in the division. That would be OK if he was a centre forward but his job is to defend which he doesn't do very well when faced with a fast, mobile, high pressing forward line.

Both Batth and Chester have the turning circle and speed of an oil tanker in three feet of swamp water

For me it the first choices should be from these 4
Baath, BMI, Collins, Souttar
Chester can get fucked for all I care. Fox keep for left-back at the moment. Shawcross if he ever proves his fitness could be in contention.
If MON was wize which I think he is, he will start mixing the experienced with the youth.

Four at the back?

Still dont know what Collins has done wrong compared with Chester, BMI and sadly these days Ryan. Batth has been inconsistent, Lindsey gives the ball away 80% of the time and always has a mistake in him and Souttar was decent today but Collins is stronger, more mobile and more intimidating than Sottar despite being 3 inches shorter. If we dont look to develop Collins now when will we???
