Referee for Saturday confirmed as Jeremy Simpson:
W2 D2 L2
2018/19
(h) Bolton 2-0 Y3 (h) West Brom 0-1 Y3 (h) Reading 0-0 Y6
2019/20
(a) Barnsley 4-2 Y5 (h) Millwall 0-0 Y2 R1 (Millwall) (a) Wigan 0-3 Y4
What are we thinking formation wise 3 or 4 at the back? I'm thinking 4 at the back with the following starting:
Davies
Smith Batth Chester Fox
Mikel Clucas
Campbell Powell McClean
Vokes
Subs: Butland, Collins, Tymon, Thompson, Ince, Afobe, Gregory.
Leaves the likes of Edwards, Lindsay, Shawcross, Souttar, Cousins, Martins Indi, Oakley-Boothe, Fletcher (I'm presuming he's not going to make it) not even in the 18.
Squad will definitely need trimming between now and the window.
I'm going 1-1, a Powell wonderstrike cancelled out by a late equaliser.

A good punt at the line up I’d say. I’d expect a couple of surprises, perhaps Afobe for Vokes. And a wildcard Oakley-Boothe?

Millwall predicted 6th by NTT20 on their pod and they are usually pretty spot on.
Very tough first game.
Think we’ll be defeated here, but will beat Bristol in the following game.

I think MON will favour 3 at the back and defensive wing backs for tough away games like this one:
Davies
Batth Chester Bruno
Smith Powell Mikel Clucas Fox
Afobe Vokes
Subs: Butland, Collins, Cousins, McClean, Ince, Campbell, Brown.
So the likes of Edwards, Lindsay, Souttar, Thompson, Tymon, Oakley-Boothe, Gregory, Fletcher (injured) and Shawcross (being eased back) not in the matchday squad. Allen and Verlinden to come back too.
I can see a cautious 0-0 on the cards.

Davies/Butland
Collins Batth Fox
Smith Mikel Clucas Tymon
Powell
Campbell Gregory
Can easily become a 4-2-3-1 with Tymon and Campbell on the wings!

Stoke are currently on the longest ongoing winless opening day run of all sides in the English Football League. That's 10 games, drawing three and losing seven, since they last won their first league game of a season back in 2009 (2-0 against Burnley).
Not holding out much hope here either, but optimistic for the season overall.

Really hope we don't insist on going with wingbacks this season unless we sign 2 proper wingbacks, otherwise the system just doesn't work
I've always preferred 4231/433 formation & with some pace in Brown now i think it would work better
Davies Smith Batth Chester Fox Mikel Clucas Brown Powell McClean Campbell
If we have Brown & McClean either wing then if the barnsley fans are correct then we have the two hardest working players on the team to help the fullbacks Then leave campbell and powell to use their energy up front
With Gregory/Vokes on the bench as plan B if we need a hold up man, but against Millwall we should be dominating the ball so i'd rather Campbell trying to get in behind

I think he will start the season cautiously and seek to garner a solid start with a 352, before maybe getting more expansive and ambitious as we settle into the season and he becomes more confident in his defence to allow free rein to the attackers as he switches to 433/4231, especially at home.

You have to have Powell on the pitch and he doesnt really work in a 352 etc

I think we will see the 3-5-2 formation with a fairly cautious approach first game. I’d love to see Tymon, Collins and Campbell but can’t see it. Think it will be
.................Davies.............. ........Batth...Chester....Bruno...... Smith....Powell..mikel...Clucas...Fox ..............,,Fletcher...McClean.........
Subs Butland Tymon Campbell Gregory Thompson Collins Brown
This means, Vokes, Edwards, Ince all miss the squad plus I’ve probably missed quite a few off

Has MoN showed any sign of doing this in pre season?

It looks like they’ve got a few players missing so it might not be bad time to play them.
Feeling quietly confident about this one.

If 352 (which I think is most likely):
Davies
Chester Batth BMI
Smith Mikel Clucas Powell McClean
Campbell Fletcher
Subs: Butland, Fox, Shawcross, Oakley-Boothe, Thompson, Brown, Vokes

The one thing that’s obvious is we’ve got a decent squad and given ourselves good options especially with Allen and Verlinden still to come back
If we go 352 I’d go with
Davies Batth Chester Indi Brown Mikel Clucas Powell (advanced) McClean Fletcher Campbell
If we go 4231 I’d go with
Davies Smith Batth Chester Fox Mikel Clucas Campbell Powell McClean Fletcher

Realistically, it'll probably be: Davies Smith Chester Batth BMI Fox Powell Mikel Clucas Gregory Vokes Taking injuries into consideration and Brown only being in the building for 2 days, I think this will be it. Again possibly McClean for Fox.

Think the only thing that would bother him is leaving out McClean Yeah, if the wing-back system becomes Plan A, it's going to be be interesting to see how he resolves the McClean/Fox choice. Just think with McClean being away for the last week with Ireland, he may give Fox the nod? Also interesting to see if he does see Brown as a RWB option, if maybe not as soon as Millwall

Fox as a left sided cb in a back 3 with McClean at wing back is more likely going forward. Not on Saturday though, Bruno will play.

Fox as a left sided cb in a back 3 with McClean at wing back is more likely going forward. Not on Saturday though, Bruno will play. I know MON has raised that possibility, as an option. I'd still be a bit surprised though. One of his main attributes is supposedly his fitness levels and stamina - and he only seems to have played 400 minutes as a centre-back in his career. www.transfermarkt.co.uk/morgan-fox/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/250277/saison//verein/0/liga/0/wettbewerb//trainer_id/0/pos/3And BMI probably isn't someone you could keep happy on the bench (although I agree he doesn't exactly demand a place and he's pretty much unshiftable on his wages)
