Our shift team leader is leaving at the end of this week and although a very competent person it would be fair to say that she isn't the best 'people' person I've ever come across. During a break yesterday the card was available for personal messages and it was clear that she won't be missed by some. Examples included such gems as, "I'm sure lots of people are going to miss you being around but I won't be one of them". Another one "Good fu###ng riddance, (only kidding).x. At the other end of the spectrum was a eulogy normally reserved for loved ones at funerals. I've only known her for 18 months and had a couple of unnecessary run ins of her making so kept my own message to a simple 'good luck Alice". Can't help but feel that the ones with an axe to grind although having done nothing to deserve her interventions will soon have a smile on their faces.

She then backtracked and decided to stay, not sure if people were refunded their 10 pences or not.
As others have said it's really a peculiar practice as is the buying of cakes when it's your own birthday

My previous job going back now to 2014 we had a woman at work parading her new prized granddaughter. Now I'm nobody to judge anyone but the grandmother was maybe 33 at most and her daughter was 14. Call me old fashioned but that's nothing to crow about. |

For someone who clearly isn’t liked, you can say more by just saying nothing. Either just put your name in it, or don’t write anything. At my work we often have leavers and the envelope and card comes around. I try not to be hypocritical and aren’t one who will say something behind someone’s back I wouldn’t say to their face, so if I like the person they get warm words and a sound donation, if I don't they get nowt.

I would just write something polite and respectful, don't lower your standards to match someone else's. Your no better than the other person if you act with bitterness in my opinion. I dont participate in brew funds, birthday cards, baby presents. I’m a miserable cunt Once when i was tour in Iraq a pregnant soldier started work at my unit while i by the time I’d come home she was on pre maternity leave. I went on my holiday and when I came back, one of the staff was doing a collection for her i politely declined. Anyway my boss called me in gave me a right bollocking about team work and setting an example to the junior soldiers etc. I said to him I’ve just come back from holiday where i got married. I dont want a card or present anyway but where’s my collection. Not even a congratulations off you. Probably the only time an officer gave me the most heart felt embarrassed apology ever  |

A little ambiguous perhaps and it could perhaps have different interpretations. But I always hope it appears to say a lot without actually saying anything. I think most recipients would accept it as being flattering!.

When I left my previous company (under a bit of a cloud unfortunately), they bought me two lovely leaving cards and I also bought them a leaving card. My cards followed the typical "Good luck for the future" etc. My card had "Sorry for your loss" on the front.  The lass on the front desk stuck it so everyone in the building had to see it. Had plenty of staff coming up and telling me it brightened up their day. |
