29, barely even past his peak. Goetze also without a club at 28 at the moment, two young elite-level footballers who just seemed to fade away for some reason. Weird.

Didn't David Bentley retire at a crazy young age too Never lived up to the ' new Beckham ' tag

Gotze has had a horrible time with injuries and illness though. Schurrle seemed like Fulhams only bright spark during their relegation last season and I remember him scoring a couple of belters so it's a surprise.

He’ll regret that when he’s in his 40’s wishing he could play still.

He’ll regret that when he’s in his 40’s wishing he could play still. Maybe literally was for the money, doesn't love the game perhaps ? There's two lower league players I can think of Coppinger and Ellison who are about 38/39 . And wasn't one of the Crawley goalscorers against us about 54 ? They play because they love the game, maybe he's had his fill and can now live his life .

Saw us lose 3-0 to West Ham in there the week before we beat them in the 1/4 final. Was full of fat blokes with bulldog tats talking about market stalls

Better for Schurrle to call it a day if he doesn't want to do it anymore though, rather than keep going for a pay cheque and putting in half-hearted performances. There must be a fair few players who do that

A slightly different level, but ex-Stokie German Phil Wollsheid has also called it quits at a young age.
Germans not up for it anymore?

Yet our record with him in the team if worked out over a season would have seen us qualify for the Europa League......

I was relieved yet astonished when they took him off after 70 mins, he was having a great game. I always thought he was a good player at Chelsea, always seemed to have a decent game against us. You have to remember most pros these days have been 'footballers' from a very young age, often below 10. I'm not surprised some of them get to the point in their late twenties where they've just had enough, especially if financially sound and not playing as much as they'd like or at a level they want to. As much as none of us fans can understand it, a lot of footballers do it as a job and have long since lost the boyish enthusiasm for the game we all still have, even in games of five a side!

Ace player. Surprised he didn't seem appreciated at his clubs.

Didn’t we nearly sign him? He would fit perfectly with the end-of-career-in-professional-football-regardless-of-age ethos we’ve enjoyed since 2016.

Ace player. Surprised he didn't seem appreciated at his clubs. A great goalscorer and most of the time from midfield or outwide position. I remember thinking the same when he was playing for Chelsea.

Remember him at our place for Chelsea one year. Think he scored two goals that day. We couldn't get near him.
Fabulous footballer.

Just coincidence, I doubt it was anything whatsoever due to him, more to do with what other players were doing....he was crap!
