Hi,
Modern times mean that I've just spent the evening drinking beer in a park with friends like a hobo, or an underage teenager. During this time discussion turned to mr Shawcross, I seem to remember that shortly before the Sweden game he made a fantastic goal line clearance (Against Man City?), that was very similar to the one he just failed to make against Zlatan. If he'd managed it, his international career may have been very different.
The questions are.
1. Am I remembering this correctly?
2. Does anyone have a link to this? (Not the Sweden game, that's easy to find)

Yes, it did happen. It was last minute or injury time I think.

Might have been one of Hughes' first home games in charge, when we drew 0-0.

I'd have expected anyone to have been able to clear that ball though. My god I forgot how good Javi Garcia was in the air.

He wasn't good enough for England end of. That said neither were Smalling, Jones, etc etc In his best 2 years of his career that coincide with this video he was as good as anyone England have had at CB in recent history with the exception of Terry and ferdinand. I recall someone recently posting a comparisson of van dijks last season stats to the either the 10/11 or 11/12 shawcross stats and Ryan pissed all over them. The truth was he played for little old Stoke and had the media not tarnished him over the Ramsey ordeal he would have got a move to a top 4 team and played more England games.

He wasn't good enough for England end of. That said neither were Smalling, Jones, etc etc You only have to be better than every other English centre back to be good enough for England. In my view, he comfortably met that criteria. In that first season under Hughes, he had to coach Geoff Cameron and Marc Wilson through every game and do their jobs for them, and we still had a better defensive record than in the previous year. In the period before his back injury, when we didn't concede a single goal when he was on the pitch during the first half of the season, he was amongst the very best in the country full stop.

But again same as with Butland no enquiries were ever received about buying him. I love him to bits just think he lacked that little extra. But as I already said the likes of Smalling and Jones got caps purely because of who they played for. Maybe he was born too soon because Southgate gives caps on merit not on who you happen to play for.

Think one of the best goal line clearances I saw in the PL years was by Beattie at the Brit.
Can't recall the opponent but remember wondering how he'd manged to get his kicking leg as high as he did, virtually kicked the cross bar clearing the ball out.
