West Ham are looking to beat off competition from Premiership new boys Stoke for the signature of Reading midfielder James Harper.
The 27-year-old looks to be one of a few players who will be departing the Madejski Stadium this summer following the Royals' relegation to the Championship and their boss Steve Coppell has recently confirmed the same.
Hammers boss Alan Curbishley has been keen to strengthen his midfield and is ready to move for the former Arsenal trainee if he is given any encouragement. However Potters boss Tony Pulis is also monitoring the situation as he also requires reinforcements in the Britannia Stadium engine room.
