Fargo on this week. Coen Brothers - always completely watchable. When I watched that off the back of the Netflix series’ I have to say I was disappointed

Free solo. Won the Oscar for best documentary in 2018 and is simply incredible. Doesn't matter if you're into the subject matter in general or not (i'm not), it's just a staggering thing to watch. Described by some as the greatest athletic achievement in human history.....kinda hard to disagree after seeing it (if you can't be arsed with the whole thing, just skip to 1hr 18 and just watch the "important bit" as that's just unmissable). Utterly beautiful cinematography also. Thoroughly recommend...although you may feel queasy at various points. Yes, its brilliant. If you enjoyed that, you'll love The Dawn Wall too. Check it out. Also an epic film! Tommy Caldwell's a beast. Mad to think what he went through with his kidnapping etc. "Meru" is also stunning if you haven't seen it. High altitude stuff (as the title suggests) so more my bag really and also a Jimmy Chin/ Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi film like Free Solo. Also "The epic of Everest" is one of the most hypnotic bits of film ever. Used to be on iplayer but not sure if still is. Made in 1924 (so it's a silent documentary with the old fashioned text frames in between scenes) documenting the 1924 expedition where Mallory and Irvine famously died after conquering the summit/trying to conquer the summit (will we ever know?).

I've watched a load of films recently...
Coherence (2013) - excellent mind-bending low budget sci-fi I highly recommend for anyone who doesn't mind a film that starts off rather talky. It was like a cross between The Man from Earth, Primer and Timecrimes if anyone has seen those.
The Rider (2017) - good drama about a young cowboy after he suffered a near-fatal head injury. Amazingly the lead was played by a real-life cowboy who'd never acted before. He was superb.
Professor Marston and the Wonder Women - I'm not sure I'll look at Wonder Woman's rope in the same way again. Good film. May still be on Channel 4 Online.
Sing Street - decent coming of age drama about a boy who forms a band to impress a girl. Loads of 80s nostalgia.
Sorry We Missed You - Ken Loach's most recent film. Not as good as I, Daniel Blake, but still an excellent portrayal of life for many in the UK. A dad takes a job on a zero hours contract as a parcel delivery driver to try and make ends meet.
Three Colours: Blue (1993) - Three Colours Red were one of my favourite bands 20 years ago, and they were named after one of the films in this trilogy. I've finally got around to watching the first. I enjoyed it enough to think the next two will be worth watching, especially given I've always liked Julie Delpy and she's in Three Colours Red.
Phantom Thread - Daniel Day-Lewis is good, but his character is unlikable, and I found this film about a dress maker just about watchable. On iPlayer.
Downfall (2004) - another highly rated war film I'm not a big fan of. I couldn't take the Hitler rant seriously due to all those subtitled memes of it.
Ready or Not - I'm not a big fan of horror films either. Another one highly rated by many that I only found okay.
Somehow, I've ended up seeing a load of Tom Cruise films for the first time recently.
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - thrilling from start to finish. The best M:I film.
Collateral - Tom Cruise makes a great villain! Jamie Foxx is good too. An enjoyable thriller I thought seemed quite unique in its premise. Currently on iPlayer.
Minority Report - decent enough. I think this was on iPlayer - maybe explaining why I've seen a few Tom Cruise films recently.

Sing Street is a good film as you say. Watched more films than ever in the last year. Always seeking new ones to watch. Current ones on the list to watch soon are '42', 'Pans Labyrinth', 'Room' and 'Cloud Atlas' Room and Pan's Labyrinth are good films. I said I'm not a fan of war films above, but the war aspect was my favourite part of Pan's Labyrinth. I haven't seen Cloud Atlas - it's a push to get me to watch films around the 3-hour mark unless it's at the cinema. 42 I hadn't heard of, but I've added it to my list. Yeah - I've gained a new respect for Tom Cruise since Rogue Nation (or whatever the most recent M:I film was called) and hearing Simon Pegg speak about him, plus how hardcore he is when it comes to his stunts. He has a great work ethic. I'm even tempted to watch The Mummy, which was panned. The console game of it is rather good. Have you seen Once? A really good film - it was by the same guy as Sing Street. As you like Edge of Tomorrow and Source Code, have you seen some of the other sci-fi films mentioned in this thread like Predestination, Timecrimes and Looper? Her is great too.

I'm not sure I can be arsed with it tbh due to the length. Anything over 2 hours has to be really good for me to sit through it.

It is weird with Cruise, given what a fucking basket case he seems at times, and fair play to him.
His films nowadays (since he clearly decided to stick with big budget, action blockbusters rather than dramas like "A few good men", "Born on the fourth of July", "The client" etc that he also did years ago) will never win any Oscars and certainly don't show off his full acting ability (which he clearly displayed in those dramas, he has far more of than is needed for things like "Mission Impossible" etc.) but......they are pretty much all very entertaining and well devised films.
Virtually all big stars have picked the odd turkey here or there in their careers at some point but (Vanilla Sky aside), his choices have been pretty damn good. Plus, he obviously has a bit of nouse to tie himself within the production of and rights to various franchises.
Gotta hand it to him, seems to be unhinged as fuck sometimes but certainly knows what he's doing in this industry.

That rock of ages was brilliant and although he is the opposite to the literary version of Reacher he did the role well. I actually like cocktail. Basically top gun in the bar trade. Bryan Brown is brilliant in it

He just doesn't make any shit films in general does he? Months ago i was downloading some films to alleviate lockdown boredom and speicfically got a batch of Tom Cruise films because you'll always get an enjoyable watch.
I liked the Jack Reacher films too but haven't read the books, so didn't have to be worried about how well he portrayed the character. I actually haven't seen Rock of Ages as musicals aren't my thing...although i do think Hamilton is incredible (but i digress).
Absolutely bloody LOVE Cocktail! Had a huge crush on Elizabeth Shue when i was a teen, ever since i saw Adventures in Babysitting, so that waterfall scene....
Bryan Brown steals the show and (as much as i also loved Top Gun) it's soundtrack kicks TG's arse.
Great film and to this day i still call the plastic bits at the end of my laces "Flugelbinders".

Top Gun is for me is one of his worst films. Garbage.

Echo all that mick but rock of ages is more than a musical.
I will actually give it a go i think.
I have seen a production of the musical and really didn't like the music at all. That's my issue with musicals really. Not the idea of what they are in general, simply that through the ages it's always music styles i don't like i.e. the "older" traditional musicals styles (both British Julie Andrews kinda stuff and American Doris Day stuff), then rock (but really weak, limp rock) in Jesus Christ superstar, this and even Rent, then chintzy insipid crap in Little shop of horrors, Rocky horror and now Beetlejuice etc. That's why i love Hamilton, simply because i've listened to rap for over 30 years, so it's far more my thing.
My 2 daughters are members of a Musical Theatre production company, so i have seen LOTS of musicals as they're obsessed. It just makes it awkward when i go to watch them in a performance and have to pretend how much i loved it
If they wrote rock musicals in a more Pearl Jam, Alice in chains or Rage against the machine kinda way, i'd be camped out in the West End (although i appreciate it probably wouldn't make it as far as the West end as most theatre audiences wouldn't be interested in that )

Fuck off you cunt. little shop of horrors is ace. And I actually love the old mgm type musicals. Fred Astaire, Doris day, seven brides that sort of thing and Albert Finney’s Scrooge. Not seen Hamilton but love the golden age of hip hop

That rock of ages was brilliant and although he is the opposite to the literary version of Reacher he did the role well. I actually like cocktail. Basically top gun in the bar trade. Bryan Brown is brilliant in it He just doesn't make any shit films in general does he? To be fair to Little shop and Rocky Horror, they don't take themselves at all seriously anyway and apart from the music actually are entertaining films.
Don't worry, you won't hear any mumble or drill shit in Hamilton! As you are into your rap though ,you'll appreciate it far more. The skill to write lyrics that are about nothing other than the content of the storyline (especially considering how dry the subject matter could be), to not have to fit a single line in during the entire show for the sake of it just as a space filler or rhyme maker and for all of the lyrics in all of the tracks to fit in with each other perfectly both contextually and chronologically in terms of the show and carry that off for the best part of 3 hours is utterly incredible. Having said all of that, Lin Manuel Miranda is a VERY impressive freestyler and his own rap is far more articulate than most rappers as he's not allowed to use the "N" word to fill up 2 of the 3 and half minutes of his songs so i guess he's had plenty of practice when it comes to widening the content matter of rap from just being about money, guns, blunts, themselves, women, money, racism, money.
The only thing i was worried about was the fact that this is one of those musicals where nothing is "spoken" i.e. the entire story is played out in rap/song, so any fast lines could get missed by the audience and then you lose the storyline....but the diction of the cast is bloody superb, so no issues at all there. The most staggering thing however, is the skill of a man that can make you sit there absolutely gripped for 3 hours while he basically just gives you a history lesson on the fucking US Financial system. Why the fuck do i care about that?? Doesn't matter, gripped anyway.
