40 years today since Forest won their second consecutive European cup against Hamburg.
Really amazing achievement .

I didn’t know they’d won it once, nevermind twice. They never mention it...

Joking apart I believe the smallest city to ever to have European Cup winners, a truly remarkable achievement and under Clough a truly remarkable team.

Eindhoven? Edit; yes Eindhoven is smaller the I defer to your greater knowledge, presumably Nottingham was smallest at the time Forest won it. Yes PSV Eindhoven won in 1988 with some of that team then winning Euro 88 with Holland

Joking apart I believe the smallest city to ever to have European Cup winners, a truly remarkable achievement and under Clough a truly remarkable team. What about Ipswich they are a town,, They haven't won the European Cup UEFA cup winners in 1981, they were a cracking side that should have won the league. To be fair the UEFA cup was fantastic competition. Before the Champions League there were two superb euro competitions plus the cup winners cup which wasn't quite so good

What about Ipswich they are a town,, Ipswich winning the UEFA Cup was a fantastic achievement but it wasn't the European Cup. UEFA Cup was a great competition, its been hijacked by the Champions League, which today is more like the UEFA Cup (but not as good ) than the European Cup (which is sadly missed)

Was far easier to win the European Cup in those days, 5 rounds and often opposition was from lesser footballing countries as of course 1 team per nation although Forest did beat Liverpool. Taking nothing away from Forest or Villa as was just as easy for the Spanish/Italian/German teams etc.Pretty sure from memory that neither Villa or Forest met Italian sides, Villa were knocked out as holders by a great Juve side.

I think John Robertson is my all time favourite non Stoke player.
'How will you handle Manny Kaltz?'
Cloughie 'We've got a little fat guy who will turn him inside out!'

Was far harder because every team you played were champions + it was knockout, no losing 3 group games and still going through. + Clubs didn't have enormous squads then.

Not at all Forest played Greek/Hungarian and East German opposition. Yes they were Champions but nowhere near as good as say a team that had come in say the top 4 in major countries.

Wasn't it an open draw though ? Sure Forest actually played Liverpool in early rounds once. For me it was harder. There are teams now who qualify with 3 defeats in the group stages, that's never right in my opinion. It was the actual Champions not some team who were 18 points behind and sneaked in 4th spot. If you had Real Madrid v Bayern first round it was tough titty All far too contrived these days. Forest bizarrely after 2 successive wins then lost in the First round to CSKA Sofia ( cheers Google ) the next season

The first time round beating Liverpool over 2 legs was monumental. Then they had to get past Grasshoppers who had beat Real Madrid. Even AEK Athens were a good side in the 70's having got to the semi-final of the UEFA Cup i think the season before beating Derby and QPR on the way, and Cologne had 3 or 4 German internationals in their team. Juventus, the favourites had been knocked by Rangers. I love 70's football...golden age for me!!!
