Part of a fabulous WBA team, member of a sublime triumvirate christened the 'three degrees' by Ron Atkinson.Superb player, pace and balance, excellent crosser, wonderful athleticism and skill:
Maybe a tawdry or obvious comparison but I always saw a lot of similarities in Chamberlain's game, equally exhilarating to watch.
Flying wingers, you just conner beat the sight of 'em.

Cunningham was fantastic. Ron Greenwood wouldn't pick him I seem to remember. Shoot did an article on him in Spain, his house was incredible.
Won an FA Cup winners medal with Wimbledon of course but injuries had ruined his game

Is it true that Tony Waddington wanted to buy Laurie when he was at Orient?

And he succeeded .
A pleasure to watch

Cunningham used to hit in-swinging corners from both sides. Work that one out!

Good call.😊👍 To be fair he was pretty much shot by then. He'd been on loan at Man U, scored an overhead kick v someone but injury had done him. Came on second half for Wimbledon but was light years away from the player he was. He was injured for the European Cup final v Liverpool but came on and was a passenger which was a shame. I remember a game for Real where they totally lost it, was in Germany and he was one of 3 Madrid players sent off. Think they lost 5 or 6 nil. Bounced around clubs after that , sadly

Cunningham used to hit in-swinging corners from both sides. Work that one out! Simple. He could use both feet. Which should be minimum requirement for a footballer. There's always a weaker one though.

Yes he did, sometimes. The rest of the time he used the outside of his right foot from the right-hand side.

I was lucky enough to see all of the WBA home games in which "The Black Pearl" played. The most graceful player that I have seen in an Albion shirt. He had to put up with some terrible tackles, which as you will know, went unpunished in that era. IMO he was never quite the same player after having been subject to an awful knee high challenge (away to Newcastle - Irving Natrass), even though he later earned his move to Real Madrid. That move was probably due to his incredible away performance against Valencia, which culminated with the home fans giving him continued applause when he left the field. A opposition black player getting acclaim in Spain in the 60's!! With the level of protection offered to players today, LC would be a true superstar, with a salary to match. Very glad to see that his merits are still recognised away from the Hawthorns

I can remember the semi final ( I think was the semi) v Ipswich when they were really well fancied to win the cup. Was only about 8 at the time. Was it John Wile and Brian Talbot who clashed heads? Mick Martin was good friends with my Dad. Real nice guy.

That semi final was one of the worst days in my lifetime of following WBA. Cunningham had still to reach his prime, and was only a substitute for this game. He came on late in the game for J Wile. Indeed it was Wile who ended up with a gash which leaked enough blood to soak his shirt, shorts and run down his legs to stain the top of his socks.

He was a good player Interesting watching the Guinness soccer 6 on the other thread and John Trewick at Oxford , Reminded me of his view on the Great Wall of China, 'you've seen one wall you've seen em all' on the Albion in the Orient TV show

Great West Brom team, Cunningham was brilliant and Regis was a great player as well. One of my claims to fame is to having played against Cyrille Regis on Hackney Marshes. My team (Lord Palmerston) an average Sunday morning pub team, drew a team called Blundell, three divisions above us, in a cup match. This was in the the late 1970's. Blundell were a team of all black players with a black coach/manager. I mention this because it seemed unusual to me at that time in London. There were plenty of black players playing in mixed teams, my team had two or three. Anyway, it seems Regis, who was playing semi-professional for Hayes at the time (he would join West Brom soon after) would play occasionally for Blundell. Nothing unusual about this at the time, a lot of semi-professionals played as 'ringers' in teams for practice. We lost 9-0, I think Regis scored 5. I was playing left back, and was slaughtered by the winger, who was on Peterborough's youth team. I learnt all this a year or so later.

I played in an expat league in the Far East and a very quiet lad turned up looking to join a team as the season was starting. Got chatting to him and he joined us. Was nothing between the teams but we won all 12 games as it turned out very shy fella was at Barcelona as a youth and played in their B team and just bossed games himself. He had turned down a move to Sporting Gijon as a teen. We didn't find this out until after a few games as he was didn't give much away. Amazing what that bit of quality can do. Couldn't imagine trying to mark Cyrille Regis though . Your poor centre half

It's easy to forget how good that Albion side was, they had some top notch players. Laurie Cunningham was probably the star of the show but they also had Big Cyril, an absolute beast of a player, Batson, Bryan Robson, Len Cantello and not forgetting Tony "Bomber" Brown. As I said, that was a really good side.
Good intro music on the clip by the way.

The defence, in the shape of Wile and Robertson and Batson, coupled with the best left back I had the pleasure to watch in an Albion shirt, D Statham Esq. were the bedrock of the side. Cunningham could not have had a better manager to allow him to display his exceptional abilities. That team should have won the league, but the big freeze which meant the team didn't play for 6 weeks, and they never got back to the levels shown before the snows came, falling away to third place when Forest beat them on the last day of the season.
Cunningham left for Real in the summer and WBA's dreams of success went with him.

Statham was quality for Albion & decent for Southampton sadly by the time we had him he was known as the flying pig with good reason Albion could have won the league for sure but I think Ipswich were better & of course neither won it

European games caught up with them and losing to Boro cost them the title. Were great to watch and was always baffled as a kid how Eric Gates was a footballer as he looked liked a 70 year old scarecrow
