linkHas anybody on here been ‘told off’ for exercising. I’m cycling and running at the moment. I’ve had a few stern stares off older couples when I’m running, nothing while cycling as it’s so lonely where I go. Is it therefore unreasonable to exercise during the pandemic or are the armchair microbiologists a bunch of miserable sods?

The cycling thing was because there was instances of cycling clubs going out together, runners most complaints seem to be they no make no attempt to distance from people and run past in close proximity or push people. When I am out with the dogs I move to one side when I see a runner or cyclist coming towards me but then I did this pre virus, I have had a couple of runners come right up behind me, one wont do it again as the westie took exception and helped him along for a few hundred metres, he probably has a new PB now

I'm using quiet country routes so I only see the occasionally walkers and it's mainly cyclists out there. I must admit that I greet everyone and seem to get a decent response and make sure that I'm more than two metres away from other road users.
I combined yesterday's supermarket shop with a run around the Brit and the canal and the river path. Started runnig at just before 7 deliberately to avoid other users and saw absolutely no one during just under an hour's run.

I'm cycling an hour with the kids and going for a jog, but I'm running at 21:00 at night when the streets are empty and we're cycling in the nearby woods where there's ample space for all. I try and combine shopping trips with my journey back from work when it's usually about 19:30/20:00 and the queues are a lot smaller anyway.......

I'm walking alot in the countryside locally doing my Wildlife photography. So I'm away from alot of people. It's all local and like yesterday I walked 8 miles. My routes occasionally take in the Canal.I just move aside for runners and cycling people though.
Honestly never seen so many bikes out. Everyone seems to be on it now. I know Cycling the last few years has become popular but you seeing so many Families of 4 out now cycling in a row.
I've no problem a quick hello and carry on. I like the quite areas because it's good for my wildlife spotting. I need things to be quiet so it's not disturbed.
I'm a key worker so after work I go to the local school field do laps of the big football pitch to keep up the fitness. (Can't run on road don't want to aggravate an injury I had) Also borrowed some weights from my gym before lockdown so do them in the garden. 👍

I’ve been using the mountain bike for road riding, so I can fit in more miles than on the trails. I’ve really got the taste for road riding now, and as I said it’s quite lonely on the rural fringes of Newcastle. As a form of exercise it’s also near perfect for social distancing. I can definitely see a purchase for a hybrid road bike coming up.

There’s definitely more people walking on b roads currently. You’ve got to respect anyone that doesn’t want to catch a virus but doesn’t give a fuck about being run over.

I work on deliveries and the amount of people walking on the roads is starting to grate slightly.
However nothing compares to the cyclists who think they are in training for the Tour de France. The ignorance and attitude of the majority (not all) is ridiculous.
I've no issue with families out on a bike ride but these lycra clad boardman bastards who are competing in their own time trial or trying to be kind of the mountain need to find a new sport for a bit. Or even better get an indoor spinning bike.

On some roads I totally agree Zerps but this just sums folk up these days, in a rush to get places, every second counts etc. What ever happened to bieng courteous? Why not appreciate the situation we are in and give people room and a bit of understanding rather than try to kill them because how dare they be in your/our way?? Just a thought.

If they weren’t on the actual highway would people have to swerve them?

Can't really own up to that being me and based on the driving scores we receive daily I would certainly class myself as one of the safest. However I would agree that in general the speeds of road users since lockdown particularly is residential area's is much worse than normal, mainly due to less traffic. Back on subject of exercise and forgive me but driving vans/cars/lorries isnt what I would deem as exercise so in terms of our budding Tour de France rattling down country lanes and in built up residential areas at higher speeds than normal would put them in the same dangerous bracket. In addition, the amount of miles they are no doubt clocking up (and the distance they are from homes of which I know from following them down wind country lanes) would see dog walkers lambasted or 'droned' in recent weeks. Ideally we should have more cycle friendly routes for them to go and perfect their skills but whilst lockdown is on they do appear to somewhat get a free pass.

A family of 3 or 4 going for a daily bike ride in line with lockdown rules is not going to be overly strenuous or venturing overly far from their home. Kitted out in full Team Sky gear pelting along country lanes and then residential areas trying to bear their PB's is just unnecessary and is proving an added danger at a time we dont really need it. Would it be to much to ask for those specific users to find a different form of exercise or use a fixed bike in their house/garden if they need that specific form of exercise?

I can definitely see a purchase for a hybrid road bike coming up. Couple of years ago treated myself to Carrera Crossfire 2 hybrid. Fabulous bike 24 speed disc brakes and very light weight for ally frame. Ideal for canal towpaths, old railway cycle tracks and light off road stuff as well as road riding. My previous steed was a Giant and weighed a ton this one is big leap forward in performance and comfort although I did buy a stem riser for a tenner from Amazon which raised the handlebars about 60mm and makes a massive difference for my decrepit arthritic frame. Think Halfords have discontinued the Crossfire range of models but think Carrera are pretty good value as mid range bikes.

I probably look like one of those bastards, the problem is, all the potholes are within a metre from the curb where you'd want a cyclist to be. Never really appreciated how bad the roads are until I started cycling on them!

Added to the dead give aways of a rucksack etc.. I dont think there is enough cycleways really for bike users and I couldnt agree more about the potholes it's so dangerous for cyclists. Stay safe out there

Going out cycling/running/walking is my highlight of the week now. People seem friendlier than usual. I'd guess well over half the people I pass smile or say hello.
I do need a new bike (mine is knackered), but bike shops are either closed or sold out of decent mountain bikes within my budget. I also need running shoes, as I'm running in a pair of split shoes designed for astroturf. I've bought two pairs online but a shoe from one pair split and the other pair are slightly too big. My first time buying footwear online and a zero percent success rate so far. Why aren't shoe shops considered an essential service?
Pre-lockdown, I got most of my exercise by cycling when I needed to go anywhere local and as part of my commute, and often running to catch the train the way my hours and the train times worked. That seemed to keep me fit enough for my hiking trips.
