Strange flag in their paddock 20 seconds in, German writing. Unless they had a German playing, i recall that Ivan Golac but presumably he was from the Balkans.

Remember being in that pen in that corner, a real end to end game, didn't realise it would be the last game for a while as the Argies invaded the Falklands the week after.

Old football grounds look ace. Sometimes I think I was born 30 years too late. I guess the only consolation is that, if I die in the next 10 years it'll at least be a shock.

Nah, by the 80s they were grim. They were designed before the war as places to stack up as many spectators as cheaply as possible with no worries about health and safety. I know people harp on about the Vic and these places, but they were unfit for purpose in terms of centres of entertainment for people who’d grown up postwar expecting mod cons like an indoor toilet, a comfortable environment and decent refreshments facilities. Many of them were crumbling down and patently unsafe: cue Bradford, cue Heysel. Pay-at-the-gate meant overcrowding for many games. Even worse, because they had become breeding grounds for hooliganism, the government even insisted on wrapping the terraces up in iron fencing, so that the fans were penned in. Cue Hillsborough. No doubt some one will say I’m being a namby pamby softy with no sense of romance for the good old days, but it was pretty shit IMHO.

They were relics put to shame by grounds in other countries. Listening to some you'd thing there was nothing like them and they were full every week. Many weren't fit to host games. I remember going to see Gothenburg FC play Waterford in a friendly and had never seen a ground like it,better than any ground in the top division here.

Love the commentary from a different age:
"Watson - He will enjoy that one!"
None of this modern BS about not celebrating when you score against your old club!

I remember a game at Wrexham and I could hardly see half of the pitch.

Wrexham is the worst ground I've ever been in. Must have been the 70s when I went. Was dying for a piss but couldn't see any signs for the toilets so asked a policeman where the loos were. He pointed and said over there. I said all there is is a brick wall, his reply was yeah, that's the toilet, piss up the wall!!

I remember a game at Wrexham and I could hardly see half of the pitch. The first time I went to Wrexham (the 1-0 win in 1977/78) I ended up down the front of the terrace peering under the advertising boards to try and see what was going on.

Well I only had a few short glimpses of that era (Ninian Park) and I loved it but I suppose I don’t really know what I’m talking about as I never lived trough the last era of terraces or experienced the horror that some speak of.

Stoke and saints just been on bt this morning, the game at the brit when we were 3-1 down and down to ten men with zonzie seeing red for a late tackle, Jerome scored the equaliser from about what seemed a mile outside the box, sat there after watching how good we were thinking what the fuck went wrong..............

The sad thing is that Jerome's goal would have been disallowed under the current interpretation of handball.

They enjoy it for sure, you can see them smile in close ups, making tiny gestures. They just don't go over the top celebrating as they would against any other team.

I have no issue with Law's reaction after scoring against Man U. There was total honesty in that in any era, Its the modern idea that if you once played half a season on loan at a club, you shouldn't celebrate that gets to me.
TBH, not all players today do behave like that (Clucas for example seems very honest in that regard!), but enough do behave that way to goad me into letting off steam behind a keyboard.

They were horrible mate.I remember going to Bramhall lane (Sheffield United) where we were rammed in the away end,and with the bloody fencing and low roof you could only see the ball when it was in the air.Absolutey shite view.
