Anybody else agree with his recent comments about the big English clubs. I for one do. Good as Ferguson is he would not have been anywhere near as successful without the back up of mega bucks. Yes ,I know it is the market, but for the love of God if one player can command 300k a week where the hell are we going. I can't stand Platini because I think he is anti-English,but his comments are correct.

An english club are not offering 300k a week, a spanish one is. Fergie is one manager that does also have many English players in the squad and team. Platini has only stuck his nose in 'cause he's gutted we are going to dominate europe again.
Why isn't he having a go at Madrid for offering 300k a week, twice what united are offering? Why wan't it ever a problem for UEFA when spanish and Italian clubs were/are buying players with all dodgy money? Now that's cheating!

So are you all happy at the prospect that the big four get even further out of reach. Sport is supposed to be a reasonably balanced playing field, not just pure business. Sure, this season and next we are in the Premier League to survive and then build on that, but then in that time how much further away will they be. If Stoke can ever compete at the top,and lets dream they can,I for one don't want Man U,Chelsea,Arsenal and co to have naffed off into some Super European League. Football at the top isn't about successful business because a successful business wouldn't be allowed to get into debt the way the top four do. Level playing field. So was the pitch at the Croft,Penkhull.

Lets not kid ourselves here, The majority of the teams in the top 6 have always spent the most money on players. Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Man utd, Blackburn, Leeds, Chelsea have all spent big to get up and stay up with the elite. Even when Stoke had the super team of the 70's with a lot of local players we still went out and paid a world record fee for a goalkeeper and a British record fee for an out field player. For the last 40 years money has run football the only difference now is that the sums of money are getting bigger and bigger.

I agree with the Mikester. The gap between rich and richest, now means no one without millions (debt or otherwise) can compete for the championship. How can that be compared to the 70s, when it seemed that Liverpool always won the league, but they were actually challenged by Nottingham Forest, Derby County, QPR, Ipswich, West Ham, and even Stoke! As for Platini being an asshole, he may well be, but I can't find anything to disagree with in his comments. Just because there are examples of corruption etc in Italy, or ridiculous spending in Spain, doesn't mean 'our' big clubs are beyond reproach. The system that allows an alleged murderer and dictator to take ownership of Manchester City is completely insane. He said: We need to find the means, with the European Club Association, to help clubs to solve their problems. Defeat should not be a financial disaster. The goal is not to win titles but [to make] money to pay off debts. Look at the debts of Chelsea and Manchester United. Fifa and Uefa owe it to themselves to fight this. Because today it’s those who cheat who win. “We are going to need to find a solution. We’re starting to work on it, but I am very concerned by clubs being bought by foreigners. I don’t see why Americans come to invest in these clubs, if not to turn them into products. It’s a never-ending gold rush and then you get to this proposal of a 39th game abroad.” Why do supposedly patriotic people identify with foreign-owned businesses and defend them on the basis that they're somehow English? Bizarre. And the idea that it is just the market is a joke too - the whole Premier League concept was corrupt from the start, with conflicts of interest all over the place. Ask yourselves a question - which Premier League would you prefer Stoke to be entering? 1 One where big teams have more money but others can challenge for honours with good management and shrewd signings, but perhaps English clubs (or 4 of them) don't do quite as well in Europe. 2 One where 2 (perhaps 4) teams can win the league and the rest are there to be whipping boys. But the 'big 4' can win the European honours, and we get to see Ronaldo destroy Stoke twice a season. I'm well chuffed that we are in the PL, but let's not think we're part of some exclusive club, we're just hangers on, desperate for a few crumbs from the tables of the mega rich. My big problem with Platini is he doesn't actually do anything about it or even make some concrete proposals. Anyone help out there?

Nowhere in the Euope (or at least in the big leagues) is the top four such a closed shop.
That's probably why he is focusing on th Premiershit.

I think it is fair to say that Platini is no anglophile, but the heart of what he says should seen by any football fan as absolutley right.
What he is saying is that English football is selling it's heart for a profit. That the Premier League is in danger of becoming an all encompassing beast due to incredible sums of money being thrown around, that those at the heart of power within the English game are happy to prostitute the Premier league in a bid to gain a few extra quid, whilst destroying the national team at the same time.
Don't let your jingoism blind you to the fact that Platini is absolutely right. The Premier League is financially & morally repugnant.
