In these troubled times this may seem a strange question.
This week end I decided as I could not return to my normal summer home I would bring foreword my decision to buy a car in the Autumn to today. However the limits on traveling, social mingling etc have stopped me dead in my tracks. I am confused. Is the situation meaning that commerce is about to come to a standstill ? Do I need a car if I am going to be confined to my home for many weeks ?
If and when the situation improves will cars be cheaper or more expensive? Add to all that Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid or Electric.
Hope this does not seem frivolous but I need to make a decision soon as I am a seventy year old with limited time available.
All answers both serious and frivolous are appreciated.

I was looking at cars at Hilton Garage last weekend and the place was packed, no shortage of customers. The cars I've been looking at have sold fast, so we're certainly not near the bottom of the market.
I'm going to wait a while as I think prices might drop.

This is what you need Ray. Me , mrs burrows and the cray twins had the pleasure of an amphicar ride on the lake at Disney springs at Christmas.

Get a motorhome, might as well kill two birds with one stone.... I have actually thought about that. If I ever give up the boat it could be a possibility. Having said that when you look at those big really jazzy ones the fuel consumption is horrendous. Not what you need if you go touring. ?

I'm in LA and they just closed restaurants & bars (except for take away), so there's less traffic and driving is more fun. My ex is from Lombardy and it's lockdown, except for supermarkets & chemists. I follow Italian news and the footage from hospitals in Bergamo etc is horrendous. I reckon there's a good chance our politicians will panic and shut everything except food + chemists down, just like in Italy. If I thought I'd need a car to get food etc later then I'd play it safe and get one now. You might be able to argue a good price and loan rate if your dealer's panicking too.

They can’t shut everything down because people will starve. Try and book a tesco home delivery. You’ll laugh.

Don't know about that but you'll probably get a cut down price for a holiday in China

Normal summer home? What are you a migrating bird, or someone with more than one property who needs to splash some cash?

If you already have a car, keep what you have. If not buy a small cheap second hand runabout with the best MPG you can find, to get you to the supermarket and back over the coming months. Save every available penny to get you through what is coming, you can always replace it if/when we come out of this.

There is a hint to the answer in my user name and your choice of a word in the question. In the meantime I need a new car as the present one is well past it’s sell by date.

Ray, do you need to go through a garage?
As sad as it is, I imagine some people may well sell up privately because the money is going to be very important to them during these times and they’ll be looking to ‘downgrade’.
Or are you looking for something that is more relatively new?

Or are you looking for something that is more relatively new? Not really sure. One advantage of going through a car sales org. is that they will hopefully take my present car in part ex. However if I saw a motor that I fancied for sale privately I would be quite happy to go for it. The other dilemma is Petrol, Diesel, or Hybrid. I really have no idea. I hear that diesel don’t hold the price and are difficult to sell on should I want to change in a few years. That is not reflected when you look at second hand cars. I do relatively low annual mileage but am attracted to low fuel consumption and road tax. I am not sure if dealerships and car supermarkets will be open for much longer, and we may well be restricted in our ability to travel to them. Troubled times.

I am not sure if dealerships and car supermarkets will be open for much longer, and we may well be restricted in our ability to travel to them. Troubled times. Well my parents had a DS4 Diesel back in the beginning of 2015, they were one of the first (according to Evans Halshaw) to purchase it as it was the new model.
IIRC, it cost them £17,500ish brand new. Flash forward to 2019 and my dad wanted to trade in for a Megane R.S. Holdcroft offered £6000. Managed to get them to £6300 in the end. Reasoning was
A. It's a Citroen B. It's a Diesel
But the mileage you get from a diesel is excellent.
Yeah that is a concern RE the car supermarkets. God knows what the climate is going to be like even by Sunday, let alone in a few weeks. MINI are generally low tax, as are the usual suspects like the Clio, Auris etc... Well worth researching into.

No you don't need a car. Just get somebody to do your shopping for you. Essential stuff.

From what I’ve read the best deals are 69/20 plates, new.
There was literally tens of thousands of cars in enormous car storage depots

While the market for second hand cars from dealers (i.e. your 4 year old Fiesta for several grand) has stayed firm'ish, although I'd question the footfall, the arse has absolutely dropped out the private second hand market and I've seen some great motors on Gumtree lately that people can't seem to give away. Last week I looked at an 08 Focus with 72k miles on for £500 and when I asked who else had viewed it, he said I was the only one. That's ridiculously low and if you're in need of cash you will price something appropriately. I would say now is the time to buy if you're into any kind of 'Bangernomics' because you're seeing decent low mileage 10 year motors losing up to a grand off their usual values.

I am approaching the three year itch. Have bought new for thirty years and, despite my best intentions, have always replaced the car with a new one as the warranty runs out. Expensive and silly, no doubt, but common sense and cars rarely go together in my case. But this time I was thinking of keeping this one for ten years and then going electric (or whatever technology is securely in place, possibly hydrogen?), by which time there will hopefully be a better infrastructure and unit costs will have come down. Financially, it makes sense, saving about £10,000 by buying one car over the ten years, rather than three. It’s better for the environment and my conscience (a small contribution in the face of the US attitude towards fossil fuels). But I know I will get bored with it, and am always looking at the latest models, which is always the problem.
I reckon there will be some good deals out there after the lockdown. Car sales were slumping before and they are 97% down on this time last year. They will be desperate to shift stock and kickstart their sales rooms. Oh dear, I’m already at it again🙈😞.
