I'm reading the Tony Waddington book at the moment " Director of a working mans ballet " ( a very good read for us older stokies) and it says that Jimmy McIlroy interchanged passes with Stanley Mathews before slotting the ball into the net.
My recollection and being at the game at the ripe old age of 10 was Jimmy Mac scored direct from the corner at the shed end.
Either me in my old age or the writer have got it wrong, I've googled it and cannot find the answer so can any of you Stokie historians confirm one way or another.
The writer also mentions about Jimmy Mac joining from Burnley but not about Alex Elder joining at the same time.

I was at that game and think the writer is correct and that Jimmy Mac scored from open play. Jimmy Mac did score direct from a corner but I think that was at Ipswich away. May even have been a cup game back in 64.

Source Wikipedia There you go, it must be the old age thing😉 I was a camparatively new Stokie when we signed Jimmy Mac and I found things like us signing a household name exciting. By the time we signed Elder I took these things in my stride.

I was also at that game. As a 15 year old living in Devizes ( Wiltshire ) it was the first time that I was allowed to go to London on my own. In the 62/63 season Stoke didn't play any games in January or February because of the exceptional snowfall that winter. That explains why this game was played on the 11 th of May when usually , in those days , the FA cup final was played on the first Saturday in May.
I was at the other end of the ground opposite the shed end and didn't see much of our goal apart from knowing that it came from a Stanley Matthews corner. In those days the Chelsea pitch had a dog racing track round it. I've still got the match programme and according to it out team was O'Neil , Asprey , Allen ,Clamp . Stuart , Skeels , Matthews , Viollet , Mudie , McIlroy and Ratcliffe. The attendance was just over 66,000 and interestingly the programme does not contain any non football related adverts.

Was it a midweek game? If so I was there with my dad after having a day in London for a job interview.
Don’t remember much about it but I think we won 0–1

Elder was a very poor signing and played in the semi final at villa park, 4 years after JM signed

Elder was a very poor signing and played in the semi final at villa park, 4 years after JM signed I don’t recall him being that bad, certainly no worse than the LBs we have now.😜
