Maybe too early to be 'post' punk ('77) but kinda proto-post punk (if that makes sense?)

Most of Wire's output, though i'm not up on 'genres' so wouldn't know whether they're post-punk art-punk or just punk- punk.
Fookin' typologies...😂

I don't think he (as a solo artist) ever did become 'proto post punk' or indeed 'post punk', he just simply knocked out good ol' fashioned rock 'n' roll, however The Stooges were certainly 'proto-punk'. Blimey, this thread very quickly became a bit intellectual ... no doubt, I started it! Sorry ...

I don't listen to much music at all. I just dislike about 99% of music I hear.

That's kind of weird and rapey. Like I said I dislike 99% of music I hear and not a great music fan at all. Are you in my shed? I'm just intrigued why somebody who apparently isn't into music, keeps opening music threads and then offers contributions to them. Is that such a 'weird' observation to make?

He gave me a box of records from his shop when it closed down a few years later after this came out including this single. I don't remember the era as too young just liked the stuff from that time and played it a lot when was about 15.

I don't really bother with his output after that, but surely more big dumb rock. The Stooges certainly had a bit of punk about them (proto punk as you say, but maybe a US variety) but is there not hints of the beginnings of post punk on The Idiot? I'm listening to it now, and while there's none of the rhythm you'd associate with Joy Division or the like, there's surely hints. I mean, if Talking Heads get lumped in then Iggy's Idiot belongs in there. It's his art album. And it's the last thing Ian Curtis ever heard.

Actually, I think you're right. I'd always thought of The Idiot as a bit post punk but the only tracks I'm hearing it is Funtime and Baby and there it's a bit of a stretch.
