He got better as the game went on but I’m mystified by some of the praise he’s had and the man of the match award. He did well to settle and overcome a nightmarish start where he twice got caught on the ball deep in his own half.
I actually thought for a holding midfielder he needed to keep it simple more. There were a fair few times when he attempted an ambitious pass to nobody for no good reason. 71% pass completion isn’t great for a DM.
Hopefully he grows into the role but I was actually more impressed by Cousins when he came on than by Thompson.

Think cousins is a good squad player, gets some flack but that’s the stoke way, Thompson I thought was trying to hard to impress then settled down, cousins is one then players who will just be cousins, comes on does his job will end up been liked by the Fans for the job he does, really like how he never complains just gets on with his job.

I thought he was anonymous really. Got caught in possession a few times too. One of those thankless jobs, don't get noticed until you make a mistake. Ask Whelan he did the job for years, dont miss him until hes gone. Anyway back on track Thompson hasn't played many games this season and not at this level, young time on his side, could be a big player in the future. I'd agree with that about Whelan - it'd be insteresting to see some heat maps and touch maps over laid for players like them. It'd prove or disprove the theory that they provide a lot without it being easy to notice. Nzoni had games like this for us too.

This is a forum in a results based game, where things get discussed and critiqued... I was a bit puzzled at this myself, thought it was a totally ott reaction to someone else's opinion, I suspect the involvement of alcohol personally. What I was expressing was my OPINION that nobody minds being criticised provided that those doing the criticism are in a better position (eg re job performance) than those they criticise. My OPINION was then labelled as being alcohol influenced, whereas the poster has no evidence of this other than his own jaundiced OPINION. Factually, I rarely drink alcohol but, hey, don't let that get in the way of an unjustified jibe

I wasn't at the game yesterday. Did Allen and Clucas play higher up the pitch, with Thompson behind?

However when he expressed his opinion he was told that the only people qualified to criticise were those who were better than the players in the team. This would reduce this message board fairly dramatically I'd have thought.

I couldn't make out who was supposed to be playing where most of the game and the players looked just as confused too...... O'Neill says he tinkered with the formation. Powell was on the left but was very deep a lot of the time,Clucas and Allen seemed to alternate as the middle of the 3 behind Campbell,Ince was all the shop, Thompson was DM,all very confusing to me So, you couldn't make out the formation ... Then go on to explain exactly where everyone was playing (I agree with your assessment) The you say it was confusing. I'm confused by your confusion ...

Is that clearer ? Good. 😊

Personally I thought Thompson had a quiet game and couldn’t understand the MOM award. Having said that, a lot of DM work goes un-noticed as the nature of the job is to sit deep, break up opposition play and provide extra cover for the centre backs which, if you consider Cardiff threatened little and we won 2-0, suggests Thompson must have achieved his task so in that respect he def deserves to keep his place. MOM for me was Joe Allen followed by Butland or Ince. Don’t like to see young lone strikers taking too much responsibility on their shoulders (no support) and can’t understand the disappearance of Diouff ?

Definitely his best outing today - although admittedly not up against much.
When McClean returns, could we get by with:
Clucas Thompson Powell Ince Campbell McClean

Thought he was superb. Not afraid to get stuck in and do the dirty work and generally uses the ball very well.

He’s really quite decent.
Another one though that I don’t particularly as the deepest player in the midfield but he’s risen to the challenge of the step up really well.

For me he was MOTM. Covered every blade of grass. As said, hull were abysmal but you can only plat what’s in front of you and Thompson was superb.

Yeah, he's too lightweight to be the deepest player. He should just be a squad player at present but injuries will dictate otherwise after today.
