No offense but I hope the powers that be are not thinking the same way: Collins - is not ready for football at this level. He desperately needs experience and game time, of which he has no chance of getting regularly at Stoke - he needs to be loaned out. Shawx - we cannot rely on him ever playing regular football for us again, so he really can't count as a number Batth/Lindsay - not good enough for a team that supposed to have aspirations of premier league football, Wolves fans told us that Batth was found out at this level(championship) and was not good enough for tier 2 footy. He has done alright in games, but he surely can't be all we aspire to, Lindsay has been, on the whole, appalling and again can't be good enough for a club with any ambition to move forward. Bruno - is having to fill in at full-back as the manager does not think he is good enough to compete with the other central defenders at the club - think that says it all. We need to get rid of a few and bring in 2 decent central defenders as a matter of urgency and while we are at it a right/left-back too. Defensively we are not far off catastrophic - we have no strength or depth in any position No offence taken 😆 Completely disagree on Collins, he should start for me. Lindsay and Batth while far from ideal should be just about ok till the end of the season especially if Shawcross comes back into the picture. My point was we have bigger issues than CB (CB can be sorted out in summer) Hope you are correct. For me the defence has been neglected for the last 8 or 9 windows and as stated we have no strength or depth in there. It has been the reason for our decline and we are possibly 1 or 2 injuries away from being in massive trouble in that department - can we neglect it for yet another window?. Our current manager is said to be passionate about defending properly and having the right bodies in the right place to do that - I think/hope he will try to bring people in if allowed - he does work with backroom staff who clearly don't recognise defence as a position on the football field and may have his work cut out - but at least he looks like he is trying to bring bodies in - and for me in a much needed area

Smith is supposedly very good going forward (though I’ve not seen any evidence at Stoke), Lindsay was a top defender last season, BMI should be a good cb (but has been solid at lb) and apparently so should Batth. It’s hard to then justify bringing in others when we already have a good number of senior players in these positions, even though none have had a good season.

That Millwall home game has shown O'Neill that our biggest problem in possession is playing it out from the back. No one across that back line can move forward with the ball and just commit an opponent and lay it off

I don't think we have players underperforming(Smith maybe) the rest are not good enough. 2 managers now have thought Ward is not good enough to play at LB and prefer square pegs rather than playing him which effectively means we don't have 1 natural LB at the club - that is surely unacceptable. Lindsay has been playing for Barnsley before arriving here the yo-yo team of this division, his distribution is poor, he is not brilliant in the air for a central defender and, as stated, looked a poor buy. Personally I would get rid of him and also BM, Ward & Edwards(3 of which will be getting paid a fair crack I should imagine) in this window and the summer and try and bring 5 or 6 in the other way. We should be looking to add numbers and quality in defence, as stated, not to have 1 viable LB at the club is unacceptable for any club in any division, let alone Stoke. We should also be looking to have competition for places even in a smaller squad, there is virtually no competition at all in any area of defence including goalkeeper, we all pretty much know what the back 5 will be today. All of the above easier said than done in the modern day game and, for me, made harder by the fact that we would probably get little interest on the players I have mentioned - but surely what we should be aiming for. The fact that our manager is being linked to central defenders suggests he is not happy with his lot in that area of the park also

I've never heard of him but according to wiki Leicester paid thirteen million quid for this bloke a year and half ago and he hasn't got on the pitch for them for even 1 minute of a league game in 18 long months. Wimmer esq 😎

The fact that our manager is being linked to central defenders suggests he is not happy with his lot in that area of the park also In honest, I won’t take Jones’ opinion on any player seriously, particularly those he signed: he had no idea what to do with any of them. As for O’Neill, he played Ward consistently (who wasn’t terrible) until Indi replaced him after injury and hasn’t put a foot wrong. I don’t know what to make of the rest in truth, Lindsay had a very good season last year and while he likely isn’t going to ever be a stand out defender in this league, he may do well with guidance. I also just generally disagree with the ‘competition for spaces’ argument. Aren’t we in this mess because we decided to do that and it has obvious problems when trying to build stability, seemingly it is terrible for training. How many good teams in the Championship don’t use their youngsters, or for that matter have a youth team that is doing as well as ours? Surely we should be looking there for building competition also and for other spots, looking to buy ‘versatile’ players?

Can’t understand why we need another CB at all. Batth Lindsay Collins Bruno Shawcross Surely that’s more than enough cover (even allowing for injuries) No offense but I hope the powers that be are not thinking the same way: Collins - is not ready for football at this level. Baath had a great game away at top of league but hes wank oooòoooooooook He needs consistency that's all Indi is filling in at left back cos we have nobody decent and hes left footed defender, hes our best cb Cheer up pal

I really don't see the point in bringing another central defender in as we already have Batth, Lindsay, Collins, Shawcross and Indi who can play there. We also have Ward and Tymon as fall back options at left back if Indi has to slot in at central defence. I actually don't see the point in getting anybody in at the moment. I think our squad is strong enough to stay up comfortably with a decent manager, as we seem to have now, so I'd save the money for next season unless we can bring in a good enough option at left back who can be our first choice next season as well.
