Sad news. One of my favourite players from the 66 World Cup Final. Heluva player - would have been just as good if he had been plying his trade in the top flight these days, I think.
RIP, Martin - condolences to friends and family.

Fabulous player. Famous for 'ghosting in' and always said to be 'ahead of his time' (whatever that meant). Most of all, he brought us a world cup, and I'm old enough to have seen him do just that. RIP

Martin and Kath became friends of mine some 20 years ago, sadly we’ve had little contact in the past 6 years as his illness took hold. I can tell you, he was such a genuine, gentle and humble man and didn’t really like attention. When he was here in Menorca he’d always want to come and watch a junior game and was amazed at the facilities and quality of players that a small island had to offer.
An amazing humble and kind man who always put others first. He donated an England shirt to my son signed by the 66 team when I lost my wife and said he could do with it as he wished. At the time he’d have swopped it for a packet of crisps and a can of coke but now glad he didn’t as he realizes the real value, even though we’d never sell it.
RIP Martin.

"A Rolls Royce playing in a game against Ford Anglias"
‘They called him “The Ghost”,’ said Hurst. ‘Nobody realised he was there, in the box, 15 times a game because the ball didn’t always come. When it did, bang, he put it away.’

When it did, bang, he put it away.’ He really was one of the "old school", from the days when footballers really were just that.
To look at "footballers" today, constantly scheming with their agents to make more and more money out of their clubs - it is a different world. Are present day "footballers" any better as footballers? Absolutely not!
Another one of the good guys gone.
RIP indeed.

Ramsey said he was "10 years ahead of his time"
Sadly he has been taken at least 10 years too soon.
Football is, slowly, waking up to the horror that is dementia, which has taken so many of it's brightest stars
RIP Martin Peters
