Spoke to my mate this morning at work who is a Sunderland fan and he said Lawrence and Whitehead came to Sunderland at the same time and Whitehead was generally thought of as the better player. Keane has been playing him at right back as cover for first choice Bardsley and he wants to play centre mid. Would be an excellent signing for us.

Another bit of pointless info - I played against Dean Whitehead at schools level. I also played against Matt Taylor and scored a goal against Rhys Evans (at Millwall now).

The fact that Lawrence knows him and Whitey (see, I have given him a nickname already) has seen the success he has had and how much happier he is under Pulis can only be a good thing.
Get on the blower Liam!
Also, could work in our favour because;
- Agent from Stoke who has seemingly been 'bigging us up' in the press despite his vale'ness' - Could do a couple/few deals with Sunderland so Keano would know how much money he had earlier - Think it is O'Connor or Kempy who knew him from Oxford

News 12/06/2008 - Agent plays down rumour of a move for Whitehead
Stoke's promotion to the Premier League has ensured they are being linked with a plethora of players in the national media. So who has the rumour mill got plying their trade at the Brit next season? Read on to find out ...
THE agent of Sunderland captain DEAN WHITEHEAD has played down reports the player is on his way to Stoke City in a £3m deal.
Stoke are one of several club being linked with 26-year-old Whitehead, right, amid reports of a bust-up with Black Cats boss Roy Keane. The latest, according to today's Daily Mirror, is relegated Reading.
However, Whitehead's representative, PFA senior executive Phil Sproson, says neither Sunderland or Stoke have approached him about a deal for the midfielder, who has played 162 games for Sunderland.
Sproson said: "He is under contract with Sunderland and we only did that last year.
"He has had one or two people interested in him during the last couple of years.
"I know Tony Pulis has been an admirer of his for a while, but that is only to say he is Tony's sort of player. Maybe people have picked it up from there."
Stoke assistant Dave Kemp was one of Whitehead's managers at Oxford before the player's £150,000 move to Sunderland four years ago.

Wants to stay at Sunderland apparently...
Sunderland skipper Dean Whitehead has dismissed claims he wants to leave the club after a bust-up with manager Roy Keane. Reports in recent weeks have suggested the 26-year-old midfielder was looking for a way out of the Stadium of Light. However, Whitehead today moved to insist he has no plans to quit Wearside as he prepares to return for pre-season training. He told the club's official website: "It's exciting times for the club and I want to be a part of it. "I have been here four years now, I have seen a few ups and downs, but securing top-flight status was a huge thing for us last season and I can't wait to tackle it again this year. "The gaffer is planning to bring in some new players and that will only benefit the club and me as a player. "It will create more competition for places and will improve the overall quality of the squad when we sometimes lacked it last season, so it should enable the club to move on to the next level. "I certainly want to be a part of that and I am looking forward to the challenge of staying in the team." Whitehead, a £325,000 signing from home town club Oxford in August 2004, missed much of the first half of last season after damaging knee ligaments during the first week of the campaign. He returned in November and played in the last 26 games, alternating between his specialist central midfield berth and the problem right-back spot before Phil Bardsley's January arrival from Manchester United. Whitehead is one of few survivors from the side which suffered relegation from the Premier League with a record low 15 points at the end of the 2005-06 season. However, he played a leading role in their return to the top flight and has impressed Keane with his leadership qualities. Meanwhile, there was no word from the Stadium of Light today on speculation that they are maintaining an interest in Tottenham's £16.5million striker Darren Bent. There is little doubt a frontman with a proven track record in the top flight will be among Keane's targets this summer, especially with Kenwyne Jones recovering from knee ligament damage suffered in Trinidad and Tobago's friendly clash with England earlier this month. Keane has vowed to recruit experienced Premier League players this summer as he attempts to avoid a second successive fight for survival.
