He’s watched the same game as us and seen the same problems: Tippy tappy sideways crap Garbage set pieces No tempo Poor passing out from the back Sloppy defending Question is, what can he do about it that the previous four or five managers couldn’t? I hate saying this ..because I was not the biggest Pulis fan .....in fact didn’t much like Pulis ball. But he knew the limitations of the players and he basically trained Or drilled them is a better word, in how to defend properly....he then worked them on set pieces until they could do them in their sleep. ...with one up front we could catch them on the break and lump it Up to the front man ....whose main purpose was to score .....not defend or owt ..so he could save his energy for the odd goal sprint ....defend well, score mainly from set pieces and the odd nicked goal on the break . Not tippy tappy sideways nonsense in front of you own goal ....it’s asking for trouble. I agree that Pulis did what he did well, and he took us from the 40th ranked team up to the heady heights of 11th, but he's not here and never will be again. He also managed a grand total of 2 wins and 5 draws in his first 16 games, including a 6-0 defeat. So, how do you think MON got NI from being ranked 122 up to 20th? Do you think he might be able to identify player's weaknesses and play to their strengths? Do you think he drilled them to do the job he needed them to do? Do you think he may be able to identify which system meets his players abilities best. After just 3 games, I think the improvement is clear to see.

Mclean, Gregory and Diouf up top, Badou, Etebo and Allen (because he won't drop him) in midfield, gives us more pace and mobility. The defence is a plodding mess though. Watching Batth try and control it in order to pass it across to Indi or punt it upfield is frankly embarassing. I'm not sure how MON sorts it and doubt Ryan's return will improve anything. With a check book? We have to get to the January window without resorting to the cheque book though and there's the rub. We still need to get some decent performances with what we have.

This defeat will serve its purpose. Our manager has now seen close up the problems that have dogged us for almost 3 seasons. The 4 goals against Barnsley were a blip and not the norm. Defensive errors and being toothless up front has led to where we are. I have faith he can change things around but it will take time. I take the game against Wigan as his yardstick, which must have shown to him that we are not a complete lost cause.

We have a hybrid squad of Hughes/Rowett/Jones players all bought with a different style of play in mind (and Pulis if you include Shawcross). Some of those players have had to adapt to playing under Hughes, Lambert, Rowett, Jones and now O'Neil. And people wonder why we look disjointed and ineffective?
It's going to take O'Neil months to get that ragbag group of players to form an effective team and years to build a coherent squad.
Will he get the time? Probably not.

Fuck possession go direct this squad isn't suited to tippy tappy football it was interesting at Barnsley how more direct we were compared to last night getting the ball forward and early into Gregory for him to hold it up and bring others onto play we need to do that at home too but press high also forget possession go direct 4-4-2.

To think we can suddenly turn into a winning machine after being on the decline season by season is pure folly. We will undoubtedly have blips and poor performances here and there, yes he will make mistakes as all manager's do, but I've seen & heard enough so far to be greatly encouraged that in time he will do well here.
