Question for anyone who many know - I'd like to perhaps get involved in a career or a job in helping people rebuild their lives or even just general counselling, is the only avenue to this by doing a university level qualification?

Serious answer. Think about contacting the Samaritans. Lots of genuinely nice people there to help.
They would I am sure welcome you and give training which could be a good first step.
I know a couple of people who have done it and find it very rewarding but can also be tough at times.

A friend of a friend did the same thing. Started off volunteering at the Samaritans..making tea, general helper. They gave her some training and she very quickly moved up the ladder. Did a couple of vocational courses and then quit her Building Society job to be a full time counsellor. No idea where she is now but she would be brilliant as a counsellor. Lovely person.

Did a little bit with The Samaritans years ago. Very friendly, very worthwhile and they will get you started and point you in the right direction.
From what I remember about your hotel posts and what you have taken on to help people here I think you will be wonderful. The hotel stuff was sometimes hilarious and often touching (the basis for all good drama) but always compassionate.
Just one question Rob, how long have you felt this way?
